Dance Traditions That Surprise The World

The MTV Video Music Awards have always been the wild child of award shows. Since 1984, they’ve delivered more jaw-dropping moments per square inch than any other ceremony. While other award shows play it safe with scripted speeches and predictable performances, the VMAs thrive on chaos, controversy, and the kind of unscripted drama that keeps people talking for years.

From wardrobe malfunctions to stage invasions, these moments prove that sometimes the most memorable parts of the show happen when nobody expects them. Here is a list of 18 VMAs moments that dominated headlines and became part of pop culture history.

Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift

The 2009 VMAs will forever be remembered for one moment that shocked everyone in attendance. When Taylor Swift won Best Female Video for ‘You Belong With Me,’ Kanye West stormed the stage mid-acceptance speech and declared that Beyoncé had ‘one of the best videos of all time.’ The incident left Swift standing awkwardly on stage while the audience erupted in boos. Kanye described his own behavior as ‘rude’ in an interview later that week and was said to have apologized to Taylor. The moment became an instant meme and sparked a years-long feud that would play out in songs, interviews, and social media.

Madonna Kisses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera

In arguably the most infamous VMAs moment ever, in 2003, pop icons Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera took to the stage to perform a medley of hits, with Britney and Christina wearing wedding dresses in tribute to Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin.’ The ‘shock’ moment was actually scripted for the women to quickly peck one another, but in her recent memoir ‘The Woman In Me,’ Britney confessed that she had decided to ‘just go for it’ and kiss Madonna passionately instead. The performance made headlines worldwide and cemented its place in VMAs history as one of the most talked-about moments ever.

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress

On September 12, 2010, American singer Lady Gaga wore a dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards made entirely out of raw beef. The dress, bag and even the tiny little beret were all made from Argentinian beef, bought from designer Franc Fernandez’s butcher in Los Angeles. Gaga explained that the meat dress was tied to her protest against the military’s ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy and was a statement against governmental restrictions placed on the rights of gay soldiers. The dress was condemned by animal rights groups, while named by Time as the top fashion statement of 2010.

Miley Cyrus Twerks with Robin Thicke

The 2013 VMAs became the year everyone learned what twerking was, thanks to Miley Cyrus. Miley had released her album ‘Bangerz’ with the lead single ‘We Can’t Stop,’ featuring her poked-out tongue on the artwork, to ring in the new era of sass-pot Miley. Her performance with Robin Thicke was filled with provocative dancing and foam fingers that had parents across America clutching their pearls. Nothing else mattered on the Internet for at least a week after Miley Cyrus twerked, grinded and licked everything on the 2013 MTV VMAs stage. The performance sparked debates about appropriation, feminism, and whether Disney stars should ever be allowed to grow up.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s Awkward Kiss

One of the most uncomfortable moments in VMA history happened in 1994 when Michael Jackson took the stage with his then wife Lisa Marie Presley and shared an awkward kiss. ‘Just think, nobody thought this would last,’ said Michael Jackson at the time. And it didn’t. The couple’s stilted stage presence and forced affection made viewers squirm in their seats. The kiss itself proved less stilted than the laborious standing around on stage leading up to it. Their marriage would end just two years later, making the moment even more cringe-worthy in hindsight.

Madonna’s Wedding Dress Performance

Herbie Hancock won the most MTV Video Music Awards in the show’s inaugural year, but it was Madonna who made history, posed as a life-sized bride figurine on a 17-foot cake, surprising the Radio City Music Hall crowd with ‘Like a Virgin.’ At the time, the idea of Madonna singing in a wedding veil on top of a wedding cake caused a major kerfuffle and cemented this moment among the award show’s most infamous. The performance set the tone for what the VMAs would become: a place where artists could push boundaries and make statements that other award shows wouldn’t dare allow.

Eminem vs. Moby Confrontation

In 2002, Eminem was already at odds with Moby since Moby had taken issue with his lyrics, so when he got onstage to accept the award for Best Male Video from Christina Aguilera, who also disliked him, he openly dissed Moby. ‘That little Moby girl threw me out of my zone,’ he said while reading his list of thank yous, adding ‘Keep booing, little girl. I will hit a man with glasses.’ Eminem also ‘thrust a middle finger into Moby’s face just out of camera range’ while the latter was being interviewed. The incident showed that even award shows couldn’t contain the real-world feuds brewing in hip-hop.

Britney Spears’ Comeback Performance

Britney’s 2007 performance of ‘Gimme More’ was supposed to mark her triumphant return to the spotlight. Instead, it became a painful reminder of how the pressures of fame can overwhelm even the biggest stars. Britney’s fumbled VMAs comeback performance of ‘Gimme More’ is seen in a new light after she revealed in her memoir she had a panic attack backstage. Her lip-syncing was obvious, her choreography looked tired, and the whole performance felt like watching someone who really didn’t want to be there. The moment highlighted the harsh reality of celebrity culture and how the media machine doesn’t always account for human fragility.

Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus

Stemming from a misunderstanding between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift over VMA nominations, Miley told the New York Times that she saw Nicki’s actions as making it about herself. Days later, on the VMAs stage, Nicki confronted Miley during an acceptance speech for Best Hip Hop Video: ‘Back to this bitch who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?’ Miley, who was hosting that year, tried to deflect with humor, but the tension was palpable. The moment proved that social media feuds could spill over into live television in spectacular fashion.

Prince’s Revealing Outfit

The performance of ‘Gett Off’ made headlines after Prince performed in a yellow suit with two circles on the backside that seemingly revealed his bare butt cheeks. This was vintage Prince: provocative, boundary-pushing, and completely unapologetic. The outfit became as much a talking point as his performance, proving that sometimes the most effective way to get people’s attention is to give them something they’ve never seen before. Prince understood that the VMAs were a place where normal rules didn’t apply, and he took full advantage of that freedom.

Rage Against the Machine’s Protest

Rage Against the Machine walked a thin line as political rabble-rousers who also indulged in show business spectacle, but that fragile balance finally seemed to collapse in 2000 when the band performed at the VMAs and competed with Limp Bizkit for the Best Rock Video award. When Bizkit won, RATM bassist Tim Commerford interrupted Fred Durst’s acceptance speech by climbing up on the stage’s scaffolding, spent the night in jail, and Rage frontman Zach de la Rocha was reportedly so disgusted by his antics that it helped spur the band’s breakup soon after. The incident showed how even protest bands could get caught up in the spectacle they claimed to oppose.

Diana Ross Touches Lil’ Kim

In 1999, while introducing Diana Ross, it seemed that temptation got the better of her as she reached out and jiggled Kim’s breast and joked, ‘I think it’s the new Supremes.’ The incident was totally unplanned and caused a rake of controversy over the issues of consent and body image. What made it even more awkward was that it happened live on television with millions watching. In 2023, while speaking to XXL about her career highlights, Kim said, ‘I think when Diana Ross touched my boob. That was everything.’ The moment became a perfect example of how the VMAs could turn even legends into headline makers.

Michael Jackson’s Birthday Confusion

The 2002 VMAs coincided with Michael Jackson’s 44th birthday, so MTV decided to celebrate with a nice introduction from Britney Spears and some cake, with Britney calling MJ the ‘artist of the millennium,’ which gave him the idea that he had won some brand new award. Apparently, he overheard Britney Spears mention the ‘Artist of the Millennium’ award…which didn’t exist. Instead, MTV wanted to honor him for his birthday. Jackson gave a heartfelt acceptance speech, thanked his parents and magician David Blaine, while the crowd erupted in joy anyway. The mix-up became a charming moment that showed even the King of Pop could get caught up in the excitement of the moment.

Natia ‘Lil Mama’ Kirkland’s only major hit, ‘Lip Gloss,’ was already two years in the rearview by the time of the 2009 VMAs, but she decided to show her pride as a native New Yorker and join Jay-Z and Alicia Keys onstage during ‘Empire State of Mind.’ As the song came to a close, Kirkland decided to be part of the show, posing in a b-boy stance while a nonplussed Jay-Z did his best not to acknowledge her. The cringe factor was off the charts as viewers watched someone essentially crash one of the night’s biggest performances. It became a masterclass in how not to insert yourself into someone else’s moment.

Howard Stern got cheeky in 1992 with an outfit that proudly displayed his rear end, completed with wing-tip — literally — gold boots. This was peak Stern: outrageous, attention-grabbing, and designed to get people talking. The radio shock jock understood that the VMAs were a place where normal decency rules were suspended, and he made the most of his moment in the spotlight. The outfit became one of the most memorable red carpet looks in VMAs history, proving that sometimes the most effective fashion statement is the one that makes people’s jaws drop.

Fiona Apple’s Anti-Establishment Speech

In her speech for Best New Artist, 20-year-old Fiona went with her heart — and the guidance of Maya Angelou — telling viewers that the world they were living in was ‘bullshit’ and that it was better they didn’t follow their idols. ‘Go with yourself. Go with yourself,’ she said on stage, before thanking her mother, sister, producers, and management. The speech was raw, honest, and completely unexpected from someone who had just won their first major award. It became a defining moment that showed how young artists could use their platform to challenge the very industry that was celebrating them.

Pee-wee Herman’s Comeback

After his arrest for indecent exposure in an adult theatre, Pee-wee Herman made a triumphant comeback that shocked the world at the VMAs, opening the show by asking the audience, ‘Heard any good jokes lately?’ A clever nod to the scandal that was met with laughter. The moment was perfectly calculated: acknowledge the elephant in the room, make light of it, and move on. It showed how the VMAs could serve as a rehabilitation platform for celebrities looking to reclaim their narrative and prove that sometimes the best defense is a good sense of humor.

Drake’s Awkward Rihanna Declaration

Drake is known for not always being the most media-savvy character, a trait he cemented in 2016 when he presented Rihanna with the VMA Video Vanguard Award and let slip that Rihanna is ‘someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old.’ Naturally, fans screamed and cheered at the admission, while Rihanna was seen slightly rolling her eyes. Upon handing over the award, Drake seemingly went in for a kiss while Rihanna swerved. The moment was painfully awkward and became an instant meme, proving that even carefully planned romantic gestures can backfire spectacularly when the other person isn’t on board.

These 18 moments prove that the VMAs have always understood something other award shows haven’t: controversy sells, and authenticity trumps perfection every time. From Madonna’s provocative performances to Kanye’s stage invasions, these incidents didn’t happen despite the VMAs format — they happened because of it. The show created a space where artists felt free to be their most unfiltered selves, and viewers tuned in specifically hoping to witness the next unforgettable moment. In an age of overly produced content and carefully managed celebrity images, these raw, unscripted moments remind us why live television remains one of the last frontiers of genuine surprise.
