Hollywood loves a winning formula, and sometimes that means casting the same actor in virtually identical roles over and over again. It’s not always a bad thing—some performers have built entire careers on perfecting one particular character type.

But it does make you wonder if they could pull off something completely different if given the chance. Here is a list of 15 actors who usually play similar roles.

Dwayne Johnson

The Rock has become synonymous with the charismatic, muscle-bound hero who saves the day with a smirk and a raised eyebrow. Whether he’s racing through a jungle, scaling a skyscraper, or tracking down criminals as Luke Hobbs in the Fast franchise, Johnson brings the same larger-than-life persona to nearly every role.

His characters are typically hot-shot loners who learn to be team players, complete with plenty of sarcasm and charm. Even when he voices a cartoon dog in DC League of Super-Pets, the character still fits the same mold—brave, macho, and leading the pack.

Jason Statham

COLOGNE, GERMANY – JUN 28th 2019: Jason Statham (*1967, English actor, film producer, martial artist and former diver) , world premiere of the final movie trailer for Fast & Furious Hobbs & Shaw at CCXP Cologne

Statham has consistently been typecast as the tough, no-nonsense action hero in movies like the Fast & Furious series and other high-octane action films. Part of his typecasting comes from his ability to do most of his stunts, as he is proficient in mixed martial arts including kickboxing and jujitsu.

His characters rarely show vulnerability, and they almost always know their way around weapons and hand-to-hand combat. Statham himself seems unbothered by the repetition, once stating he’s not looking to become a serious dramatic actor—he just wants to do quality work in his wheelhouse.

Michael Cera

Widely known for his roles in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Arrested Development, and Superbad, Michael Cera’s projects are often regarded as repetitive, making it hard for audiences to distinguish his characters’ personality from his own. He typically plays the awkward, soft-spoken young man navigating uncomfortable social situations.

From George Michael Bluth to the lovable loser in Juno, Cera has mastered the art of playing the endearing nerd who fumbles his way through life. His delivery is so consistent that his on-screen persona has become almost indistinguishable from how people imagine him in real life.

Samuel L. Jackson

LOS ANGELES – APR 18: Samuel L Jackson at the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival Opening Night – 30th Anniversary Presentation Of “Pulp Fiction” at the TCL Chinese Theater IMAX on April 18, 2024 in Los Angeles, CA

Samuel L. Jackson is known for taking part in many popular projects, particularly action blockbusters, but there seems to be no doubt that while the actor is undeniably talented, he is also typecast quite frequently. According to some observers, Jackson essentially plays himself in every single movie.

His intense presence, distinctive voice, and penchant for delivering memorable one-liners have made him a go-to for tough, authoritative characters. Whether he’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a hitman in Pulp Fiction, Jackson brings the same commanding energy to the screen.

Jennifer Aniston

Aniston has been a star for nearly 20 years but is primarily found in cookie-cutter romantic comedies where she plays the lovelorn lead who needs to either move on to another man or fight for the one she’s after. Films like Just Go With It, The Break-Up, and Along Came Polly all follow similar patterns, with Aniston playing variations of the same relatable, girl-next-door character searching for love.

The roles she chooses are often so similar that it doesn’t help when her real-life personal drama echoes the characters she plays.

Morgan Freeman

Freeman has been typecast as the go-to guy in any movie that needs an older sage for the hero to lean on. His most famous entry into this role was in The Shawshank Redemption when he played Red, the wise best friend to Tim Robbins’ character.

Since then, whenever a main character needs a voice of reason or wisdom, Freeman is often the first call. His roles in films like Se7en, Million Dollar Baby, and Bruce Almighty all serve similar narrative purposes—he’s the mentor figure who guides the protagonist through their journey with calm authority.

Zooey Deschanel

Deschanel is frequently cast as the quirky girl—the cute, big-eyed hipster with a childlike, wondrous outlook who represents the quintessential indie heroine. Her role as Jess in New Girl became the defining example of this archetype, but she’d been playing similar characters for years before that.

In 500 Days of Summer and Yes Man, Deschanel brought the same whimsical energy to love interests who are charming precisely because they’re charmingly odd. The quirky girl persona became so associated with Deschanel that it’s now difficult to imagine her in a drastically different role.

Seth Rogen

Rogen usually plays the stoner or slacker good guy of a film, forced to change when presented with an abnormal situation, and he also plays a lovable lout with whom women inexplicably fall in love. Movies like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, Superbad, and This is the End all feature Rogen as some version of the same character—an underachieving but good-hearted guy who stumbles into responsibility.

His distinctive laugh and improvisational style have become so recognizable that audiences know exactly what they’re getting when Rogen appears on screen.

Ryan Reynolds

Ever since his Deadpool days, Reynolds has been typecast in the same roles, though he did occasionally branch out with different-genre films like thriller drama Buried and the sci-fi movie Life. To general audiences, Reynolds’s on and off-screen persona is quite similar, with some noting that he has typecasted himself into that Deadpool humor kind of character.

His quick-witted, self-aware, fourth-wall-breaking style has become his signature, and now it appears in nearly everything he does, from action comedies to even his Aviation Gin commercials.

Rebel Wilson

Wilson plays a character so ebullient, unstoppable, and raucous that she steals every scene she’s in. She’s forever typecast as the best friend—a funny, wild girl with a heart of gold.

After her breakout role as Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect, Wilson found herself repeatedly cast as the outrageous comedic sidekick who delivers the film’s biggest laughs. While she goes far beyond simple comedic relief, Hollywood has largely kept her in similar supporting roles rather than giving her dramatic leading parts.

Vin Diesel

After playing the role of hardened yet paternal Dom Toretto for a few movies in the Fast franchise, Diesel became a producer and has been instrumental in defining the series. His gravelly voice and imposing physical presence have made him perfect for playing tough guys with surprising emotional depth.

Whether he’s a street racer, an intergalactic warrior in Guardians of the Galaxy, or a super-soldier in xXx, Diesel brings the same intense loyalty and family-focused philosophy to his characters. The main variation is simply the setting—jungle, space, or urban streets.

Tom Holland

LOS ANGELES – DEC 13: Tom Holland at the Spider-Man: No Way Home Premiere at the Village Theater on December 13, 2021 in Los Angeles, CA

Known predominantly for his role as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland has found himself frequently cast as the youthful, charming, and somewhat naive hero in several other films. His boyish enthusiasm and acrobatic skills have made him the perfect choice for young protagonists who are in over their heads but determined to do the right thing.

Even in films outside the superhero genre, Holland tends to play earnest, wide-eyed characters who retain that Spider-Man-esque quality of hopeful determination mixed with self-doubt.

Jason Bateman

Bateman has always played the role of the normal or saner guy among a group of hilarious, chaotic people. In everything audiences have seen him in, he’s always kind of a jerk, but he’s so good at it.

From Michael Bluth in Arrested Development to Marty Byrde in Ozark, Bateman specializes in playing the straight man who’s surrounded by madness while maintaining a deadpan, slightly exasperated demeanor. His characters are usually intelligent and capable but perpetually annoyed by the incompetence of those around them.

Hugh Grant

Grant played pretty much the same vaguely charming, intelligent, British bloke with very little moral compass in every film he was in for years. Two Weeks Notice, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Love Actually all feature Grant as the flustered, self-deprecating romantic lead with impeccable manners and a posh accent.

His signature stammering delivery and sheepish charm became so iconic in the ’90s and early 2000s that he became the face of British romantic comedies. Only in recent years has Grant begun taking on darker, more villainous roles that break from this pattern.

Michelle Rodriguez

Rodriguez always plays the tough girl who isn’t taking any nonsense and could probably beat you up. From Letty in the Fast franchise to Trudy Chacon in Avatar, Rodriguez has built her career on portraying fierce, no-nonsense women who can handle themselves in a fight. Her characters rarely show vulnerability, and they’re almost always loyal to a fault.

While she excels at this archetype, it means audiences haven’t seen much range from Rodriguez—she’s essentially playing variations of the same badass persona in different settings.

Beyond the Typecast

Typecasting isn’t necessarily a career bomb—many of these performers have become incredibly wealthy and successful by sticking to what works. Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek stated that it’s better to be typecast than not to be cast at all.

Still, some actors who once seemed locked into specific roles have successfully broken free, proving that range is possible with the right opportunities. The question remains whether audiences will accept their favorite typecast stars in radically different roles, or if we prefer the comfort of knowing exactly what we’ll get when their names appear in the credits.
