Making it in Bollywood is hard enough, but jumping from Mumbai to Hollywood? That’s like switching from cricket to baseball while blindfolded. Most actors crash and burn, but some manage to pull it off and actually get Americans to care about them.
Here’s 17 Bollywood stars who somehow convinced Hollywood they were worth the risk.
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka went from Miss World to Bollywood queen to literally marrying a Jonas Brother. Started with that ABC show Quantico where she played an FBI agent, which was weird seeing a Bollywood actress with an American accent.
Now she’s in everything from Baywatch to The Matrix and married to Nick Jonas. Talk about winning at life.
Irrfan Khan
This guy was probably the most respected crossover actor before he died in 2020. Did serious stuff like Life of Pi and The Namesake but also showed up in Jurassic World getting eaten by dinosaurs.
Americans actually knew his name, which is pretty rare for Indian actors. His death was a huge loss for both industries.

Deepika Padukone
One of Bollywood’s biggest stars who decided Hollywood needed her too. Did xXx: Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel, which was basically just an excuse to do action scenes and look amazing.
She’s been trying to crack Hollywood for years but keeps going back to India where she’s already a superstar.
Anil Kapoor
This dude’s been around forever and somehow ended up in Mission: Impossible and 24. Played a president on TV which was pretty cool seeing an Indian guy in charge of America on screen.
He’s like 60-something but still looks younger than most 40-year-olds. Good genes or good plastic surgeon, either way it worked.
Dev Patel
Technically British but got famous playing Indian characters so he counts. Slumdog Millionaire made him a star overnight, then he did Lion which got him an Oscar nomination.
Now he’s in everything from The Green Knight to Hotel Mumbai. Kid went from unknown to A-lister pretty fast.

Freida Pinto
Also got her break in Slumdog Millionaire alongside Dev Patel. Did a bunch of Hollywood movies after that but none of them really took off the way Slumdog did.
Still working but hasn’t quite reached that next level yet. Sometimes one great movie is enough though.
Nimrat Kaur
Started in Bollywood then showed up in Homeland playing a Pakistani spy, which was interesting casting. Also did The Lunchbox which got international attention.
She’s been bouncing between Hollywood and Bollywood projects, which seems like a smart strategy honestly.
Anupam Kher
Character actor who’s been in like 500 Bollywood movies and somehow also ended up in American stuff. Did Silver Linings Playbook and a bunch of other Hollywood films.
Guy’s been acting since before most people were born and still going strong.

Respected Bollywood actress who did Life of Pi and The Namesake with Irrfan Khan. She’s more of a serious dramatic actress so her Hollywood stuff tends to be artsy rather than blockbuster material.
Quality over quantity approach which seems to work for her.
Ali Fazal
Started in small Bollywood roles then somehow got into Fast & Furious 7 and Victoria & Abdul with Judi Dench. That’s quite a range from action movies to period dramas.
He’s been building his Hollywood resume slowly but steadily.
Naseeruddin Shah
Veteran Bollywood actor who did some Hollywood projects like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He’s more known for his serious dramatic work in India but occasionally pops up in American movies.
One of those actors other actors really respect.

Om Puri
Did a bunch of Hollywood movies before it was cool for Bollywood actors to cross over. Was in stuff like Gandhi and East Is East.
Died in 2017 but was one of the early pioneers who proved Indian actors could work in Western films.
Suraj Sharma
Got cast as the lead in Life of Pi when he was basically unknown. Pretty crazy that his first major role was in a big Hollywood movie with a tiger.
Hasn’t really had another role that big since but that’s still an incredible achievement for someone so young.
Kal Penn
This guy went from Harold & Kumar stoner comedies to working in the actual White House under Obama. Started doing American comedy movies then somehow became a political advisor, which is probably the weirdest career path on this list.
Now he’s back to acting but that detour into politics was pretty wild.

Dimple Kapadia
Bollywood veteran who showed up in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which was pretty unexpected. She’s been acting since the 70s in India but her first major Hollywood role came when she was in her 60s.
Better late than never I guess.
Adil Hussain
Character actor who’s been in both Bollywood and Hollywood projects. Did Life of Pi and English Vinglish.
He’s one of those actors who shows up in quality projects even if he’s not the lead. Solid career strategy.
Konkona Sen Sharma
Bollywood actress and director who’s done some international work. More focused on independent films than big blockbusters.
She’s building a reputation as a serious artist rather than chasing fame, which is probably smarter long-term.

Making The Jump
Crossing from Bollywood to Hollywood isn’t just about acting ability – you need luck, timing, and usually an American accent that doesn’t sound fake. Some of these stars became household names while others are still grinding it out in supporting roles.
