When most people think of Hollywood stars, they picture them on red carpets or in front of cameras. What many don’t realize is that some of the biggest names in entertainment have serious musical chops that go way beyond karaoke-level talent.

These aren’t just actors who dabbled with an instrument for a movie role and called it a day—they’re genuinely skilled musicians who could have made it in the music world if they’d chosen a different path. Here is a list of celebrities who are skilled musicians.

Hugh Laurie

The British actor famous for playing the grumpy diagnostician on House has been a blues pianist since his teenage years. Laurie released two full albums, Let Them Talk in 2011 and Didn’t It Rain in 2013, both of which climbed the charts and featured collaborations with legends like Dr. John and Tom Jones.

He taught himself to play by obsessively listening to New Orleans blues records and picking out the notes one by one, particularly studying pianist Otis Spann. His piano skills are so legit that he tours regularly with his band, the Copper Bottom Band, and has performed everywhere from the Royal Festival Hall in London to intimate jazz clubs in Los Angeles.

Jeff Goldblum

Yes, the guy who ran from dinosaurs in Jurassic Park is also a seriously talented jazz pianist. Goldblum has been playing piano since childhood in Pittsburgh and has fronted his own jazz ensemble, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, for over 30 years.

The band has released four studio albums since 2018, with their debut hitting number one on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart. He performs weekly residencies in Los Angeles and has played everywhere from Glastonbury Festival to a surprise pop-up at London’s St Pancras train station, where he delighted commuters with impromptu jazz standards.

Steve Martin

Long before he was a comedy legend, Martin was a teenage banjo player who fell in love with the instrument after hearing Earl Scruggs. He’s won multiple Grammy Awards for his bluegrass albums and even created the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, which awards $50,000 annually to deserving musicians.

Martin taught himself to play by slowing down 33 rpm bluegrass records and learning each note, a painstaking process that paid off when he later collaborated with the Steep Canyon Rangers. His 2009 album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo proved he’s no celebrity dabbler—bluegrass purists actually respect his playing.

Jamie Foxx

Foxx started taking piano lessons when he was just three years old and eventually earned a scholarship to study classical piano at United States International University. He also studied at Juilliard, though he left before graduating to pursue comedy and acting.

His piano skills came in handy when he played Ray Charles in the film Ray—he actually played all the piano parts himself, though matching the tempo to Charles’ pre-recorded vocals proved surprisingly difficult. Foxx can play jazz, blues, gospel, and R&B styles with equal ease, and his keyboard work appears throughout his music albums alongside his singing.

Clint Eastwood

The tough-guy actor and director is an accomplished jazz pianist who originally intended to pursue music before acting took over. Eastwood has composed film scores for several of his own movies, including Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, and Changeling, all of which feature his piano work.

He approaches the piano the same way he approaches directing—quietly, methodically, and with an understated elegance that sneaks up on you.

Keanu Reeves

Reeves played bass guitar in the alternative rock band Dogstar from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, and he wasn’t just there for the name recognition. The band toured extensively and released three albums before disbanding.

In recent years, Reeves reunited with Dogstar and they’ve been performing at festivals, proving his musical passion wasn’t just a ’90s phase.

Johnny Depp

Depp is a genuinely skilled guitarist who has collaborated with major artists throughout his career. He played slide guitar on Oasis’s 1997 song ‘Fade In-Out’ and has performed with everyone from Marilyn Manson to Aerosmith.

Depp’s guitar playing appears in several film soundtracks, including Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, where his acoustic work adds authentic texture to the scores.

Ryan Gosling

While Gosling learned piano specifically for his role in La La Land, spending four months practicing ‘City of Stars’ for hours every day, his dedication went far beyond typical actor preparation. He learned to play well enough that the filmmakers could shoot close-ups of his hands without using a double.

His co-star John Legend admitted he was ‘kind of mad’ at how quickly Gosling picked up jazz piano technique, which says something about his natural musical ability.

Scarlett Johansson

Johansson released her debut album Anywhere I Lay My Head in 2008, featuring ten Tom Waits covers and production by David Sitek of TV on the Radio. She followed it up with Break Up, a collaborative album with singer-songwriter Pete Yorn in 2009.

While her music career never reached the heights of her acting success, she continued to sing in various projects and even formed a band called the Singles with Este Haim from HAIM. Her voice has appeared in animated films like Sing and Sing 2, where she performed all her own vocals.

Russell Crowe

Before Crowe became a Hollywood star, he was already playing guitar and singing in bands. He formed the rock band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts (abbreviated TOFOG) in 1992 and served as lead vocalist and guitarist, releasing three full-length albums.

The band toured in the U.S., Australia, and Europe between his film shoots. After TOFOG disbanded in 2005, Crowe formed a new group called the Ordinary Fear of God (keeping the TOFOG acronym) and continued making music, eventually creating the Indoor Garden Party, which released an album in 2024 and toured Europe and America.

Jared Leto

Leto is the frontman of Thirty Seconds to Mars, which he started with his brother Shannon in 1998, and he’s proficient on guitar, drums, piano, and bass. The band has sold millions of albums worldwide and headlined major festivals.

Leto’s musical career runs parallel to his acting career with equal seriousness—he’s not just a celebrity vanity project but a legitimate rock musician who writes, produces, and performs at a professional level.

Zooey Deschanel

Best known for her role in New Girl, Deschanel is the lead singer and keyboardist for the indie folk rock band She & Him, which she formed with musician M. Ward in 2006. She’s also a skilled ukulele player and performs live regularly with the instrument.

Her musical style blends vintage pop sensibilities with contemporary indie rock, and the band has released multiple albums to critical acclaim. Deschanel’s voice has a distinctive retro quality that perfectly suits the nostalgic sound She & Him creates.

Robert Downey Jr.

For his role as Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 film Chaplin, Downey spent an entire year learning to play the violin left-handed, just as Chaplin did. He also learned to play tennis left-handed for the same role, showing the same intense dedication he’d later bring to playing Iron Man.

While the violin was specifically for that role, Downey has continued to play multiple instruments as a hobby and has demonstrated his musical abilities on various talk shows over the years.

Miles Teller

Teller learned to play drums as a teenager and already had decent skills before being cast in Whiplash. However, he took his playing to another level for the film, practicing for four hours a day, three times a week, learning the intense jazz drumming style the role required.

He got blisters from the vigorous practice sessions but pushed through because he wanted to play all his own parts in the film. His dedication paid off—the drumming you see on screen is all him, and the film earned multiple Oscar nominations.

Adrien Brody

To prepare for his Oscar-winning role as pianist Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist, Brody practiced piano for four hours every day under the watchful eye of director Roman Polanski. He learned to play several Chopin pieces, including the Ballade in G minor, while simultaneously losing 30 pounds and isolating himself from friends to better understand his character’s suffering.

The piano playing in the film is actually Brody’s, and his commitment to learning the instrument at such a high level contributed to his Academy Award win. He became the youngest person to win the Oscar for Best Actor at age 29.

Bruce Willis

The action star’s favorite musical hobby is playing the harmonica, which he carries around in his pocket and plays whenever the mood strikes. Willis has jammed on harmonica at various events and charity concerts over the years.

While it might seem like an unusual instrument for an action hero, the harmonica is perfectly portable for someone who’s constantly on movie sets, and Willis has gotten good enough that fellow musicians enjoy playing with him.

The line between acting and musicianship has always been blurrier than most people realize. What separates these celebrities from typical Hollywood dabbling is the sheer amount of time they’ve invested—not for a single role, but because making music genuinely feeds something in them that acting alone can’t satisfy.

Some of them were musicians first and stumbled into acting, while others discovered their musical talents later and pursued them with the same intensity they bring to their film roles. Whether they’re playing jazz standards in small clubs, touring with bluegrass bands, or releasing rock albums between blockbusters, these performers prove that serious artistic talent doesn’t have to stay in one lane.
