The Bermuda Triangle stretches between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, covering approximately 500,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. For decades, this region has generated intense fascination due to the unusual number of ships and aircraft that have disappeared within its boundaries. While many explanations attempt to demystify these incidents, from extreme weather to human error, certain cases continue to defy conventional understanding.

Here is a list of 14 Bermuda Triangle events that continue to perplex even the most skeptical experts.

Flight

Perhaps the most famous Bermuda Triangle incident involved five Navy TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that vanished on December 5, 1945, during a routine training exercise. The experienced flight leader reported compass malfunctions and disorientation despite clear weather conditions.

Radio transmissions captured increasingly confused communications before all contact was lost with the airmen. The disappearance became even more mysterious when a Martin Mariner rescue plane sent to find them also vanished with its crew.

USS Cyclops

The massive USS Cyclops disappeared in March while transporting manganese ore from Brazil to Baltimore. This naval cargo ship vanished with people aboard without sending a distress signal or leaving any wreckage.

The vessel had functioning wireless communication equipment and experienced fair weather conditions when it disappeared. Despite being one of the largest loss of life incidents in U.S. Naval history outside of combat, no trace of the Cyclops or its crew has ever been found.

Star Tiger

British South American Airways’ Star Tiger aircraft disappeared on January 30 on its final approach to Bermuda. The Tudor IV aircraft carried passengers and crew members when it vanished after the pilot’s routine radio check reported nothing unusual.

Weather conditions had improved from earlier reports, and the experienced captain had adjusted the altitude to avoid turbulence. The plane had sufficient fuel remaining and was under the control of a veteran pilot when it simply disappeared from existence.

Star Ariel

Almost exactly one year after the Star Tiger incident, another British South American Airways plane, Star Ariel, disappeared on January 17. The flight was traveling from Bermuda to Kingston, Jamaica with people aboard when it vanished after sending a routine position report.

Weather conditions were excellent with unlimited visibility, and the pilot reported flying under perfect conditions just before contact was lost. These back-to-back disappearances contributed significantly to the growing Bermuda Triangle mystery.

SS Cotopaxi

The cargo ship SS Cotopaxi departed Charleston, South Carolina on November 29, bound for Havana, Cuba with a cargo of coal. The vessel disappeared with crew members somewhere in the Triangle after sending a distress message reporting water in the hold.

For nearly a century, the Cotopaxi remained one of the Triangle’s most perplexing mysteries until wreckage discovered off St. Augustine, Florida was identified as the lost ship in 2020. Despite this discovery, questions remain about the unusual circumstances of its sinking.

Ellen Austin

In 1881, the American schooner Ellen Austin reportedly encountered a derelict ship drifting in the Bermuda Triangle. The captain placed a prize crew aboard the abandoned vessel to sail it to port, but both ships were separated in a sudden storm.

When the Ellen Austin relocated the mystery ship, the prize crew had vanished without explanation. According to some accounts, a second prize crew was placed aboard with the same result.

While details vary between retellings, maritime records confirm Ellen Austin’s voyage through the area.

KC-135 Stratotanker

On August 28, a U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft disappeared while flying from Guantanamo Bay to its home base in Florida. The plane carried crew members when contact was suddenly lost during apparently routine flight conditions.

Search efforts yielded no debris field or oil slick where the massive aircraft should have impacted the water. The complete absence of wreckage puzzled investigators, as the four-engine jet aircraft would typically leave substantial floating debris.

Joshua Slocum

Joshua Slocum, the first person to sail solo around the world, disappeared in November while sailing from Martha’s Vineyard to South America. The experienced captain and his sturdy boat Spray vanished without trace in the Bermuda Triangle region.

Slocum had survived countless dangerous situations during his legendary circumnavigation, making his disappearance in relatively familiar waters particularly mysterious. His significant maritime expertise makes simple sailor error an unlikely explanation for the complete disappearance.

SS Marine Sulphur Queen

This tanker disappeared in February while carrying molten sulfur from Texas to Norfolk, Virginia. The vessel’s last known position placed it in the Florida Straits portion of the Triangle.

Despite having modernized communication equipment, no distress signals were ever received from the ship’s crew. Extensive searches found only minimal debris—a life jacket and a few pieces of wreckage—raising questions about how such a large vessel could vanish so completely.

On December 28, a Douglas DC-3 aircraft disappeared while on a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Miami, Florida. The plane was just miles from its destination when the pilot radioed Miami air traffic control for landing instructions.

The controller responded immediately but received no reply from the aircraft. The flight carried passengers and crew, including children returning from holiday vacations.

Despite ideal flying conditions and an experienced flight crew, no trace of the aircraft was ever found.

Witchcraft

On December 22, experienced yachtsman Dan Burack and his friend, Father Patrick Horgan, took the cabin cruiser Witchcraft just one mile offshore from Miami to view the Christmas lights. Within minutes of reaching their viewing position, Burack radioed the Coast Guard reporting his boat had hit something but sustained no damage.

When Coast Guard assistance arrived just minutes later, no trace of the vessel or the men could be found. The luxury yacht was equipped with special flotation devices that would keep it afloat even if capsized.

Raifuku Maru

On April 21, the Japanese freighter Raifuku Maru sent a distress call while crossing the Triangle. The ship’s radio operator transmitted the message: ‘Danger like dagger now. Come quick!’

This unusual communication was received by nearby vessels which rushed to assist. The SS Homeric arrived hours later to find calm seas, good visibility, and absolutely no trace of the freighter or its crew.

The cryptic nature of the final message and complete disappearance of the vessel continue to generate speculation among maritime experts.

Connemara IV

The story of Connemara IV stands out because the vessel itself was found—only its crew had vanished. In September, this yacht was discovered sailing intact inside the Triangle with no one aboard.

Navigation equipment and the captain’s belongings remained undisturbed, and a meal was laid out on the table as if the crew had just vanished mid-bite. Weather records showed no storms in the area that could explain why the experienced crew might have abandoned ship.

The yacht’s condition provided no clues to the crew’s fate.

USS Scorpion

The nuclear submarine USS Scorpion mysteriously disappeared in May while returning to Norfolk, Virginia from a Mediterranean deployment. Although technically just outside the traditional Triangle boundaries, many researchers include this case due to similar mysterious circumstances.

The Navy initially had no idea the submarine was missing until it failed to arrive at port as scheduled. The Scorpion’s wreckage was eventually located in approximately feet of water, but the cause of its sinking remains disputed despite extensive investigation.

Beyond Explanations

These incidents represent just a fraction of the documented disappearances within the Bermuda Triangle that continue to resist complete explanation. While modern science has proposed theories from methane gas eruptions to rogue waves and human error, the particular circumstances surrounding these cases often challenge purely rational explanations.

The ocean remains Earth’s last great frontier, with depths less mapped than the surface of Mars. Perhaps the ultimate Bermuda Triangle mystery isn’t just what happened in these specific incidents, but how much remains unknown about our own planet’s waters
