Edward Elgar sent a coded note to a young friend named Dora Penny in 1897, and as far as anyone can tell, she never solved it herself. The cipher uses a series of looping symbols arranged in three lines, and it sat in a drawer for over a century while cryptographers and Elgar enthusiasts took turns failing at it.
Some claim to have cracked it using musical notation as the key, tying it to Elgar’s famous “Enigma Variations,” though no solution has earned universal agreement. To be fair, that’s part of the appeal — a composer known for hiding meaning in music left behind one more puzzle nobody can fully claim to own.
The Pigeon Cipher of Bletchley Park

A dead carrier pigeon turned up in a Surrey chimney in 1982, and it took another thirty years for anyone to notice the tiny canister still fastened to its leg. Inside was a coded message from 1944, addressed to Bletchley Park itself and signed only with initials, and here’s the strange part: even GCHQ, the direct descendants of the codebreakers who beat the Enigma, admitted they couldn’t crack it without the original codebook.
A Canadian historian named Gord Young eventually claimed a solution in 2012, tying the letters to a World War One infantry manual — though British intelligence pushed back hard, insisting the message stays technically unsolved to this day. The D’Agapeyeff Cipher

The Tamam Shud Cipher

The Somerton Man case deserves its reputation as one of the strangest unsolved puzzles connected to Cold War intelligence work, and calling it merely odd undersells it. A body turned up on an Australian beach in 1948 with a scrap of paper reading “Tamam Shud” sewn into a pocket, and a code scrawled in a nearby book that nobody has definitively translated since.
DNA testing in 2022 finally named the man, Carl Webb, which is progress worth admiring, but the actual cipher he left behind remains just as stubborn as it was seventy years ago. Identifying a man and understanding his message turned out to be two entirely separate victories, and only one of them has been won.
The Kryptos Sculpture

Jim Sanborn built a coded sculpture for CIA headquarters in 1990, and three of its four panels fell within years. The fourth section, ninety-seven characters long, refused everyone.
No agency broke it, no retired codebreaker cracked it, nobody with a badge or a doctorate managed it. Sanborn himself has leaked partial clues over the decades just to keep the puzzle from dying of neglect, which says something about how long thirty years of silence can feel.
The Chaocipher

John F. Byrne built his Chaocipher during World War One, convinced he’d created something unbreakable, and then spent the next four decades trying to get the U.S. government to take it seriously — offering it to the Army, the Navy, eventually the NSA itself, all of whom examined it and quietly declined, which must have stung more than he ever admitted in writing. Byrne died in 1960 still guarding the mechanism’s inner workings like a family recipe, and it wasn’t until his relatives finally handed over the actual device (a battered thing of interlocking disks that looked more like a toy than a wartime invention) that anyone outside his household understood how it worked.
So the NSA published the algorithm in 2010, ninety-two years after Byrne first dreamed it up, confirming that the man really had built something clever: a cipher that rewrote its own rules with every letter typed. And by then there was no one left alive who’d known him well enough to say they’d told him so.
The Confederate Bottle Cipher

A corked bottle sat in a display case at the Museum of the Confederacy for over a century, its glass fogged with age, its contents assumed to be nothing more than a curiosity from the siege of Vicksburg. Inside was a strip of paper covered in tidy rows of numbers, a message written in 1863 and never delivered, the kind of thing that gathers dust rather than attention.
It took a Canadian mathematician and a retired CIA analyst working independently in the early 2010s to finally coax the words free, using the Confederacy’s own Vigenère cipher and a keyword pulled from wartime correspondence. The Thouless Cipher

Robert Thouless played the boldest game any cryptographer has ever attempted, betting his own death on the outcome of a cipher.
