12 Disney Characters That Sparked Controversy
Disney movies feel like pure magic when you’re a kid. The songs, the characters, the happily-ever-afters – everything seems perfect in that animated world.
But when you look back at some of these films as an adult, things get a bit more complicated. Turns out, several Disney characters have caused major headaches for the company over the years.
Some characters were products of their time that just don’t fly anymore. Others were questionable choices even when they first appeared.
These days, Disney has added warning labels, changed theme park rides, and even buried entire movies because of how certain characters were portrayed. Here’s a look at 12 Disney characters that ended up causing way more drama than anyone expected.
Scar

Everyone loves to hate Scar, but his character design raised some uncomfortable questions. Critics noticed that the villain has darker fur than the good guys, plus his British accent while he bosses around hyenas that sound like they’re from urban America.
Some scenes even reminded people of Nazi rallies. While Scar remains popular, these details haven’t aged well at all.
Si and Am

These Siamese cats from Lady and the Tramp are textbook examples of lazy stereotyping. Everything about them – their exaggerated features, their song, their behavior – plays into harmful ideas about Asian people.
The 2019 remake completely got rid of these characters and replaced them with something less offensive. Smart move.

The Hyenas

The Lion King’s villainous hyenas caused problems because of how different they sounded compared to everyone else. While Scar speaks with a posh British accent, the hyenas got ‘street’ voices that made people uncomfortable. One critic straight-up called them racist caricatures.
The recent remake tried to fix this by casting differently and making the hyenas more threatening than comedic.
Shun Gon

The Aristocats included this Chinese cat character that checks every racist stereotype box imaginable. He’s got buck teeth, plays piano with chopsticks, and speaks in broken English performed by a white guy.
The movie even includes lyrics making fun of Chinese culture. Disney now puts warning labels on this film, though they probably should have known better in 1970.
Sunflower

This character from Fantasia was so problematic that Disney just erased her completely. Sunflower was a Black centaur who served the white centaurs, drawn with every offensive stereotype you can imagine.
Walt Disney himself approved removing her from the movie in the 1960s. She’s been gone from every version since 1969, like she never existed.

Native Americans

The whole Native American tribe in Peter Pan deserves its own entry because the problems go way beyond just Tiger Lily. They’re called slurs, act like cartoon cavemen, and sing that infamous ‘Red Man’ song. Even for 1953, this stuff was pushing boundaries.
Disney eventually had to change theme park attractions because visitors kept complaining.
Uncle Remus

Song of the South became Disney’s most buried movie because of this character. Uncle Remus tells stories to white children on a plantation, and the whole setup made people deeply uncomfortable.
Disney has never put this movie on DVD or streaming in America. Current Disney leadership says it’ll never see the light of day again.
Jessica Rabbit

She stands out because she appeared in a Disney movie despite being designed for adult audiences. Jessica Rabbit caused headaches when animation errors created wardrobe malfunctions that made it into the original release.
Disney had to redo the home video version. Her presence in a Disney film raised questions about what the company considered family-friendly.

Pirates

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride featured an auction scene where pirates sold women as brides. This seemed normal when the ride opened in the 1960s, but became increasingly uncomfortable for modern families.
Disney finally changed most versions of the ride in 2018, replacing the auction with a different scene. Some fans weren’t happy about messing with Walt Disney’s original vision.
Elsa

Frozen’s ice queen sparked a totally different kind of controversy. Fans have spent years debating whether Elsa represents LGBTQ+ experiences, especially with that ‘Let It Go’ song about hiding who you really are.
Disney hasn’t confirmed anything either way, but the speculation never stops. Some people want Disney to make it official, while others prefer leaving it open to interpretation.
The Merchant

Aladdin’s opening narrator originally sang lyrics suggesting that people in Arab countries get mutilated for minor offenses. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee immediately called this out as racist nonsense.
Disney changed the lyrics pretty quickly, but the controversy showed how the movie stereotyped Middle Eastern cultures right from the opening scene.

Donald Duck

Even Mickey’s best friend has some dark moments in Disney’s war propaganda films. Donald Duck appeared in movies supporting the war effort, including scenes with Nazi imagery that feel really weird to watch today.
These films won awards back then but rarely get shown anymore. It’s strange seeing such a beloved character in political content.
Learning from Past Mistakes

These characters show how much Disney has changed over the decades. What seemed acceptable or even normal in earlier eras looks pretty terrible now. Instead of pretending these problems never happened, Disney has started adding warnings to old movies and fixing theme park attractions.
It’s not perfect, but it’s better than ignoring the issues completely. The real test will be whether Disney keeps learning from these mistakes as society continues evolving.
