28 Years in the Making
Building the Garuda Wisnu Kencana started in 1989 but hit major roadblocks during Asia’s money crisis in 1997. The project sat idle for 16 years before starting up again in 2013 when PT Alam Sutera Realty took over.
Workers finally finished the statue on July 31, 2018, and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo officially opened it on September 22, 2018.
Built from 754 Pieces
The whole statue got put together using 754 separate pieces, each about 3×4 meters in size. These pieces got made at artist Nyoman Nuarta’s workshop in Bandung, West Java, then shipped carefully to the building site in Bali.
Building it this way let engineers create this massive structure while keeping it stable and getting all the artistic details right.
Copper and Brass Construction
The statue’s outside surface uses copper and brass sheets that make a beautiful golden look when the sun hits it. The copper came from Japan, China, and Latin America, while the brass came from Germany.
