Vampires have been scaring and seducing audiences for decades. Some actors made careers out of playing these blood-drinking creatures. Others just happened to nail one vampire role and became legends because of it.

Each performance brought something different to the table, whether it was pure terror or unexpected romance. Hollywood loves vampire stories, and audiences can’t seem to get enough of them either.

Here is a list of 17 actors who played famous vampires and changed how people think about these creatures forever.

Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula

Bela Lugosi basically invented what most people think a vampire should look like. His 1931 Dracula had that heavy accent, the dramatic cape moves, and those intense staring contests with the camera.

Lugosi actually played this character on stage before the movie happened. Fun fact: he never actually said “I vant to suck your blood” in the original film.

That came from comedians making fun of him later, but somehow it stuck.

Christopher Lee as Dracula

Christopher Lee took Dracula in a completely different direction starting in 1958. This guy was tall, scary, and way more physical than Lugosi’s version.

Lee barely talked in most of his vampire movies. He just showed up, looked terrifying, and let his presence do all the work.

The man played Dracula seven times and worried it would ruin his career. Turns out it made him a horror icon instead.

Gary Oldman as Dracula

Gary Oldman went all-out for ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ in 1992. The makeup and costume changes were so extreme that you could watch the whole movie and not realize it was the same actor in different scenes.

One minute he’s a young romantic lead, the next he’s this ancient monster with weird hair. Oldman made Dracula tragic and scary at the same time, which isn’t easy to pull off.

Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen

Robert Pattinson completely flipped the vampire script with Edward Cullen. Forget scary monsters – this vampire sparkled in sunlight and wrote poetry about his feelings. Horror fans hated it. Teenage girls loved it.

Either way, Pattinson’s brooding vampire boyfriend changed vampire movies forever. Whether that’s good or bad depends on who you ask, but there’s no denying the impact.

Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt

Nobody expected Tom Cruise to work as a vampire, especially author Anne Rice who publicly opposed his casting. Then the movie came out and Rice had to eat her words.

Cruise’s Lestat was charming, dangerous, and completely unpredictable. He made being evil look fun, which is harder than it sounds.

The character was basically a vampire rock star before that became a thing.
