There was a time when sports cards were just something you stuck in your bike spokes or traded at lunch for an extra cookie. Now? Some of those same cards are selling for enough to buy a house—or two. Whether it’s a rare rookie card, a printing error, or just the right athlete at the right time, the sports card market has exploded.

What used to be pocket change collectibles are now serious investments, with bidding wars, grading companies, and auctions that look more like high-stakes poker games.

Here’s a list of 18 sports cards that are now worth a ridiculous amount of money. If you’ve got one of these stashed away in a shoebox, it might be time to call a vault.
