The internet is the new way through which talents are discovered. I mean, what used to require connections, auditions, and years of grinding and hustling now sometimes happens overnight through a viral video or a clever six-second clip.

The use of social media have become legitimate launching mediums for careers, far better than anything Hollywood could manufacture through the normal traditional means. Most of the biggest names in the entertainment industry today started from merely creating content and uploading videos from their bedrooms, posting Tiktok dance clips on their phones, or singing music covers.

Their journeys prove that raw talent combined with the right platform can create something extraordinary.  Here is a list of internet sensations who successfully went from internet fame to stardom.

Six seconds was all it took. In 2013, a 15-year-old Mendes posted a cover of Justin Bieber’s song on Vine, and it exploded overnight with 10,000 likes and followers by morning. He kept posting six-second song snippets, and by 2014, he was the third most-followed musician on Vine.

Manager Andrew Gertler discovered him online and brought him to Island Records. His debut EP hit number five on the Billboard 200 in 2014, and his first full album debuted at number one the following year. He’s now released multiple platinum albums and headlined stadium tours around the world.

Liza Koshy

This Houston native started posting comedic skits on Vine in 2013 under the name Lizzza. Her loud facial expressions and physical comedy quickly made her a star on the platform, accumulating 7 million followers before Vine shut down.

She transitioned seamlessly to YouTube, where she became the fastest creator to reach 10 million subscribers. That online success opened doors to traditional entertainment, landing her roles in films like Tyler Perry’s comedy-horror and Netflix’s dance film.

She’s hosted MTV’s Total Request Live, the Nickelodeon game show Double Dare, and interviewed President Barack Obama, all before turning 25.

At 16, Burnham started uploading videos of himself playing satirical songs on his keyboard from his bedroom in Hamilton, Massachusetts. He posted them to YouTube in 2006, initially just to share with his older brother at college.

The videos went viral before ‘going viral’ was even a phrase people used. By 18, he became the youngest person ever to record a Comedy Central special. His career evolved from YouTube comedian to respected filmmaker, writing and directing the critically acclaimed film Eighth Grade.

His Netflix special Inside earned him Emmy nominations and established him as one of the most thoughtful voices in modern comedy.

Dancing on TikTok turned into a full-blown entertainment career for this Louisiana native. She started posting dance videos and lip-sync content in 2019, quickly becoming one of the platform’s biggest stars with over 88 million followers.

That massive online presence translated into a record deal, her own beauty line, and acting roles. She made her film debut in a Netflix romantic comedy and has become a regular fixture at major fashion events.

What started as fun videos in her bedroom evolved into partnerships with major brands and a multimillion-dollar empire.

She opened for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and used that momentum to launch her own successful tour. Her album Short n’ Sweet debuted at number one, and her music videos rack up hundreds of millions of views.

This Senegalese-Italian creator became TikTok’s most-followed user by doing something brilliantly simple: silently mocking overcomplicated life hack videos with his deadpan reactions. His wordless comedy transcends language barriers, making him a global phenomenon.

That viral success led to partnerships with Hugo Boss, State Farm, and appearances in major films. He’s become one of the most recognizable faces on the internet without saying a single word.

Columbia Records signed him after the song gained traction online, and he’s since won Grammy Awards and become one of music’s most innovative artists. His use of social media to promote his music and engage with fans has redefined how artists build their careers.

Jimmy Donaldson started making YouTube videos as a teenager, but his channel exploded when he began creating elaborate challenge videos and giving away massive amounts of money. His combination of spectacle and generosity made him the most-subscribed individual creator on YouTube with over 300 million subscribers.

That online success led to launching his own fast-food restaurant chain, chocolate brand, and becoming the host of one of Amazon Prime’s most-watched competition shows. He’s proven that internet fame can translate into a legitimate business empire, all while maintaining his connection to his online audience.

He’s since released critically acclaimed albums, embarked on world tours, and appeared in major films. His authenticity about his identity resonated with millions online and translated into mainstream success.

He’s become a voice for LGBTQ+ youth while establishing himself as a legitimate pop star with staying power.

A single TikTok video featuring her lip-syncing to a song became one of the platform’s most-liked videos ever, with over 60 million likes. That viral moment launched her career, leading to a record deal and the release of her own music.

Her song Build a B*tch accumulated hundreds of millions of streams, proving her internet fame could translate into legitimate music success. She’s collaborated with major artists and built a massive following across multiple platforms.

What started as one viral video evolved into a full-fledged entertainment career.

Creating the character Miranda Sings on YouTube in 2008, Ballinger turned an intentionally terrible singer into an internet sensation. Her satirical character accumulated millions of subscribers and led to Netflix giving her two seasons of her own show. She’s toured internationally, written books, and appeared on Broadway.

The character that started as a joke became a legitimate entertainment property, demonstrating how internet creativity can break into traditional media. Her ability to maintain both her online presence and traditional entertainment career shows the staying power of internet-born talent.

The Internet Changed Everything

These performers represent something bigger than individual success stories. They’re proof that the traditional gatekeepers no longer hold all the keys to fame.

The internet democratized talent discovery in ways that seemed impossible just two decades ago. A kid with a camera and an internet connection now has the same potential reach as someone with industry connections and expensive equipment.

These stars didn’t wait for permission or auditions; they created their own stages and invited the world to watch. The best part is that this list will keep growing as new platforms emerge and more talented people realize they don’t need Hollywood’s approval to build extraordinary careers.
