Animal Friendships Caught on Camera
The internet has given us so many videos and photos of animals doing amazing things.
But some of the best ones show creatures becoming friends in ways that just don’t make sense.
Dogs hanging out with deer, cats snuggling with birds, and elephants playing with completely different species show us that friendship can pop up anywhere.
Let’s dive into some of the sweetest animal friendships that people have been lucky enough to catch on camera.
A dog and an owl living together

Someone in Spain has a Belgian Malinois who found a long-eared owl that was hurt and couldn’t fly.
You’d think a dog would chase an owl, right?
Not this one.
The dog actually protected the little bird until it got better.
The owl healed up but decided to stick around.
Now they sleep in the same bed, play together, and the owl even hops on the dog’s back when they go for walks.
The cat who adopted baby squirrels

A mama cat in South Carolina had just had kittens when someone brought her four baby squirrels who’d lost their mom.
Everyone probably thought this was a terrible idea.
Cats hunt squirrels, after all.
But this cat started nursing them right alongside her kittens.
She licked them clean and treated them exactly like her own babies.
The photos of those tiny squirrels curled up with the kittens are almost too cute to handle.

Bubbles the elephant and Bella the black Lab

There’s this animal sanctuary in South Carolina where an African elephant named Bubbles lives with a stray black Lab named Bella.
Bubbles weighs around 9,000 pounds and Bella barely hits 50.
They’re best friends anyway.
Bella’s favorite thing is jumping off Bubbles’ back into the pool.
The elephant clearly loves it too because she uses her trunk to splash Bella with water.
A wild deer visits a cat every morning

A family in Pennsylvania noticed a deer coming to their porch every single day.
Their cat would go outside to say hello like they were old buddies.
They’d touch noses and the cat would rub up against the deer’s legs the way cats do.
This went on for more than two years.
The owner took tons of photos showing how much these two actually liked each other.
Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog

An elephant sanctuary in Tennessee had an eight-ton elephant named Tarra who became super close with a stray dog named Bella.
They wandered around the sanctuary together every day.
When Bella hurt her back and couldn’t walk, Tarra stood outside the building where Bella was getting help.
The elephant wouldn’t leave for almost three weeks.
When Bella could finally walk again, someone filmed their reunion and you can see how happy they both were.

The orangutan and the hound dog

At a conservation center, an orangutan named Suryia met a stray dog that just walked onto the property one day.
The staff figured they’d have to keep them apart pretty quick.
Instead, Suryia hugged the dog and they started playing immediately.
They swim together in the pool, eat meals side by side, and Suryia even walks the dog on a leash.
People visiting the center have snapped thousands of pictures of these two over the years.
A goat and a horse become roommates

Someone bought a tiny goat to keep their full-sized horse company in the barn.
The horse had always been jumpy and didn’t really like people much.
Something about that little goat just changed everything though.
The horse got way calmer and friendlier.
Photos show them napping together with the goat’s head resting on the horse’s back.
They eat from the same bucket and throw a fit if anyone tries to separate them.
The lion, tiger, and bear who grew up together

A rescue center in Georgia took in three baby animals that had been living in awful conditions.
Leo the lion, Shere Khan the tiger, and Baloo the black bear.
Usually you’d keep these predators far apart from each other.
But these three had been through so much together that they got upset when separated.
There are photos of them all grown up, still cuddling and playing and grooming each other like they’re siblings.

A giraffe and an ostrich at a zoo

Keepers at a South African zoo noticed something weird.
A young giraffe and an ostrich were hanging out together constantly.
Giraffes stick with giraffes and ostriches do their own thing.
Not these two.
They’d walk around together, eat next to each other, and sleep close by.
Visitors got pictures of the ostrich standing next to the much taller giraffe like it was standing guard.
The fox and the dog who met in the woods

A woman in Norway was walking her dog through the forest when a wild fox came up to them.
Foxes usually run away from dogs.
This one seemed curious instead of scared.
The dog and fox started chasing each other around and playing.
The woman started going back to that same spot regularly.
The fox kept showing up and they’d hang out.
She took photos of their meetups over several months.
A pig and a rooster sharing a home

On a farm in Iowa, a pot-bellied pig and a rooster became unlikely friends.
The rooster would sit on the pig’s back and just ride around the yard.
The pig seemed totally fine with it.
They shared food too, and the pig would actually leave good bits for the rooster to eat first.
The farmer’s kids took a bunch of photos showing the rooster picking at the pig’s ears with its beak while the pig just grunted happily.

Koko the gorilla and her kitten

Koko was the famous gorilla who learned sign language.
She asked her trainers if she could have a cat.
They gave her a little gray kitten.
The photos of this huge gorilla holding that tiny kitten so gently are really something. Koko would sign words like “soft” and “love” when she held her little friend.
She carried the kitten around and showed it to everyone who visited.
A cheetah with an emotional support dog

Some zoos have figured out that cheetahs do better when they have dog friends.
Cheetahs get stressed out pretty easily, especially in zoos.
A zoo in San Diego gave a cheetah cub a golden retriever puppy to grow up with.
The cheetah became way less anxious and more comfortable.
Photos show them running together and sleeping all tangled up.
The dog basically taught the cheetah how to chill out around people.
The crow who brings gifts to a girl

A family in Seattle started putting out food for the crows in their yard.
One crow got really attached to their young daughter.
The bird started leaving little things on the porch railing where the girl put the food out. Shiny rocks, buttons, bits of colored glass, even a broken earring.
The family took pictures of all the gifts.
The crow was actually picking out stuff to trade for the food.

A dog and a wild dolphin meeting daily

In Ireland, a guy and his dog went to the beach every morning.
A wild dolphin started showing up and seemed really interested in the dog specifically.
The dolphin would swim right up to shore and the dog would wade in to say hi.
They’d hang out in the shallow water together.
The dog would sometimes put its paws on the dolphin’s back.
People on the beach filmed and photographed them meeting up like this for years.
An iguana and a cat sunbathing together

Someone in Florida had both an iguana and a cat.
Most people would keep them in different rooms for sure.
But the cat got curious about the big lizard and the iguana didn’t seem bothered.
They started lying down together wherever the sun was shining in the house.
Photos show them stretched out side by side, both obviously comfortable.
The cat would even lick the top of the iguana’s head sometimes.
A rhino and a sheep at a sanctuary

A baby rhino showed up at a sanctuary after poachers killed its mom.
The little rhino was really sad and wouldn’t eat much.
The workers brought in a sheep, hoping it might help somehow.
The rhino perked up right away and started following that sheep everywhere.
They became attached at the hip and the rhino started eating normally again.
Photos show this massive animal so carefully touching noses with a small fluffy sheep.

The hippo and the tortoise who survived a tsunami

After a tsunami hit Kenya, a baby hippo got separated from its family and ended up downstream.
People rescued it and brought it to a sanctuary.
The hippo immediately latched onto a 130-year-old giant tortoise that lived there.
The hippo followed the tortoise everywhere, slept right next to it, and freaked out if they got separated.
Photos caught them swimming together and the hippo resting its head on the old tortoise’s shell.
The tortoise usually kept to itself but seemed okay with being a parent to this baby hippo.
How these friendships change what we think we know

These photos and videos show us that animals don’t always stick to what we expect.
When two creatures decide they like each other, size stops mattering.
Instincts get pushed aside for real companionship.
The people who caught these moments on camera gave us proof that friendship shows up in the weirdest places, between the most unlikely pairs.
It makes you wonder what else is possible when we stop assuming things have to be a certain way.
