Strange Ways Actors Prepared for Famous Roles
Acting is a job that asks for more than just showing up and saying your lines. Some performers take things to levels that make you wonder if they’ve lost their minds.
They change their bodies, rewire their brains, and live completely different lives just to nail a role. Here are some of the craziest things actors have actually done to become someone else.
Daniel Day-Lewis stayed in a wheelchair for months

When Daniel Day-Lewis played Christy Brown in “My Left Foot,” he wouldn’t get out of his wheelchair even when they stopped filming. The crew had to carry him everywhere and feed him lunch like a baby.
He kept this up for nine weeks straight, and ended up breaking two ribs because of how he sat all scrunched up. Day-Lewis thought doing anything less would be disrespectful to the real guy he was playing.
Adrien Brody gave up everything he owned

Adrien Brody sold his car and his apartment before filming “The Pianist” because he wanted to know what it felt like to lose everything. He packed two bags and moved to Europe, then got rid of his phone so nobody could call him.
Brody even ended his relationship and starved himself down 30 pounds by eating tiny portions of chicken and vegetables. He got so depressed during all this that he couldn’t shake it off even after winning an Oscar.
Robert De Niro actually got a taxi license

Robert De Niro drove a real cab in New York City for a whole month to prep for “Taxi Driver.” He picked up regular people who didn’t have a clue they were riding with a famous actor.
Years later, he ate his way through Italy and France for four months to pack on 60 pounds for “Raging Bull.” The guy basically invented the idea of totally wrecking your body for a movie role.
Charlize Theron wore prosthetic teeth that damaged her jaw

Charlize Theron put on heavy fake teeth to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos, but they didn’t fit right and messed up her jaw. The teeth hurt so bad she ended up with TMJ disorder, which is a real medical condition that sticks with you.
She also gained 30 pounds and shaved off her eyebrows to make sure nobody recognized her. Her jaw kept hurting for months after the movie wrapped.
Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for weeks

Heath Ledger holed up alone in a hotel for 43 days to figure out how to play the Joker in “The Dark Knight.” He wrote a diary as the Joker and practiced different crazy laughs until his throat was raw.
Ledger barely slept and plastered the walls with weird images that fit the character’s vibe. The other actors said being around him in full Joker mode genuinely creeped them out.
Halle Berry stopped bathing for weeks

Halle Berry played a homeless woman in “Jungle Fever” and decided the best research was to stop taking showers. She went two whole weeks without washing herself before they filmed her scenes.
Berry said being dirty and uncomfortable helped her understand what it’s like when society treats you like you’re invisible. Spike Lee had to practically beg her to finally take a shower when they finished.
Nicolas Cage had two teeth pulled without anesthesia

Nicolas Cage yanked out two of his own teeth with no painkillers for “Birdy” because his character was supposed to have lost teeth in war. He wanted to feel real pain so he could use that feeling in the heavy scenes.
This left actual gaps in his mouth that he had to get fixed later with dental work. Even Cage admits now that he probably went too far with that one.
Jim Carrey hired someone to abuse him daily

Jim Carrey paid a professional to basically beat him up every day while making “Man on the Moon” so he could handle the rough wrestling scenes. He also refused to be called Jim and only answered to Andy Kaufman for the entire shoot.
They filmed everything that happened behind the scenes, and it shows Carrey driving everyone absolutely nuts. Paul Giamatti, who was in the movie, said working with Carrey during that time was pure torture.
Shia LaBeouf pulled out his own tooth and slashed his face

Shia LaBeouf didn’t want fake scars for “Fury,” so he took a knife and cut his own face open. He also ripped out one of his teeth and refused to shower for weeks, which made sitting in a tank with him pretty gross for everyone else.
LaBeouf said he was trying to match what actual World War II soldiers went through living in mud and blood. Those scars are still on his face today.
Rooney Mara got multiple piercings that she didn’t want

Rooney Mara completely changed how she looked for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by getting her nose, eyebrow, and lip pierced. She never wanted piercings besides her ears, but thought they were necessary to become Lisbeth Salander.
Mara also bleached her hair and chopped it into a harsh style that took forever to grow back. She kept most of the piercings after filming because taking them out felt wrong.
Forest Whitaker learned an entire African language

Forest Whitaker spent months learning Swahili for “The Last King of Scotland,” even though Idi Amin mostly spoke English in real life. He packed on 50 pounds and watched videos of Amin’s speeches over and over to copy exactly how he moved and talked.
Whitaker stayed in character between takes and made everyone call him Idi. He said it took a full year to feel normal again after playing such an intense role.
Jared Leto sent dead animals to his co-stars

Jared Leto mailed a dead pig to the other actors in “Squad” as part of getting into the Joker mindset, along with used condoms and other gross stuff. He stayed in Joker mode the whole time they were filming, which meant nobody knew what he’d do next.
Margot Robbie got a live rat in the mail and actually kept it as a pet. Some people thought this showed real commitment, but others just found it annoying and weird.
Christian Bale lost 63 pounds eating one apple a day

Christian Bale dropped down to 121 pounds for “The Machinist” by eating only an apple and a can of tuna every single day for months. Doctors told him he might permanently damage his organs, but he kept going until they finished shooting.
Then he had to gain all that weight back plus muscle in just six months to play Batman. Nutritionists now point to what Bale did as a perfect example of what not to do, even for a movie.
Hilary Swank lived as a man for a month

Hilary Swank spent weeks before “Boys Don’t Cry” dressing and acting like a man in her regular life to understand what her character dealt with. She wrapped her chest, wore men’s clothes, and used men’s bathrooms to feel the fear of getting caught.
Swank lowered her voice in every conversation and even fooled her neighbors into thinking she was a guy. Her husband at the time said it felt like living with a complete stranger.
Robert Pattinson deliberately didn’t sleep for days

Robert Pattinson forced himself to stay awake for days before filming big scenes in “Good Time” to get that exhausted, crazy-eyed look naturally. He didn’t want makeup artists faking it when he could just wreck himself for real.
Pattinson admitted later that this messed with his head and made it hard to remember what he was supposed to say. The director had to plan the whole shooting schedule around when Pattinson would be most sleep-deprived.
Lady Gaga stayed in character for nine months straight

Lady Gaga lived as Patrizia Reggiani for nine straight months while making “House of Gucci,” talking only in an Italian accent the whole time. She worked with a psychiatric nurse to keep the character going without losing her own mind.
Gaga said she had real psychological problems after filming because she couldn’t figure out where she ended and Patrizia began. Adam Driver said in interviews that he never actually met Lady Gaga during the shoot, just Patrizia.
Matthew McConaughey lost dangerous amounts of weight

Matthew McConaughey dropped 47 pounds for “Dallas Buyers Club” by barely eating anything and working out constantly. He drank wine and ate tiny amounts of vegetables and fish for months, which left him freezing cold and weak all the time.
McConaughey said he could feel his body starting to give up toward the end of filming. Doctors now use his transformation as a warning about what can go wrong with extreme weight loss.
When the prep becomes bigger than the movie

These wild preparation stories show just how far some actors will push themselves to disappear into another person. Whether all this suffering actually makes the performance better is something people still argue about.
What nobody argues about is that these transformations often become more famous than the movies themselves. At some point, you have to wonder if Hollywood asks too much from people who are willing to give up everything.
