The world is remarkably small when you are famous. It’s inevitable to run into other accomplished individuals when you’re at the top of your field, be it politics, entertainment, sports, or literature.

However, there are some celebrity connections that are so surprising and so unlikely that you start to wonder if the universe is playing tricks on us. These are real head-scratchers, not the cliched networking connections or clear-cut Hollywood friendships.

These connections are intriguing not only because they occurred but also because of how they did so. Sometimes, such as when two people grew up in the same neighborhood before becoming famous, it’s just a coincidence.

In other cases, it’s a purposeful friendship between individuals who came from quite different backgrounds and managed to find something in common. The best ones feature historical personalities you never would have thought to talk to, much less become lifelong friends with.

This is a list of 12 unexpected relationships between well-known individuals.

Helen Keller and Alexander Graham Bell

Most people know Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, but his work with deaf education is less famous. In 1886, when Helen Keller was just six years old and struggling with being both deaf and blind, her parents brought her to Bell for advice.

Keller later wrote that she loved him at once, which is impressive considering she couldn’t see his face or hear his voice. Bell referred the family to Anne Sullivan, who became Keller’s legendary teacher, but his involvement didn’t stop there.

Bell helped support Keller’s education and frequently advocated for her achievements, promoting them in journals and turning her into a celebrity. He corresponded regularly through braille and typewritten letters, and Keller dedicated her first autobiography to Bell.

They remained close friends until his death in 1922.

Samuel Beckett and Andre the Giant

This might be the weirdest friendship in history. In the 1950s, Nobel Prize-winning playwright Samuel Beckett moved to a small French village to build a cottage.

One of the local children was Andre Roussimoff, who would grow up to become professional wrestler Andre the Giant. By age 12, Andre was already over six feet tall and weighed 240 pounds.

Beckett occasionally drove Andre to school in his truck because Andre’s father helped with construction of Beckett’s cottage. Reports suggest they talked during the rides, though the story of them bonding over cricket may be embellished.

While later retellings turned this into a special mentorship, Andre’s brother confirmed that Beckett simply gave rides to any kids heading to school. Still, the image of the author of Waiting for Godot discussing anything with a future wrestling legend remains delightfully absurd.

Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt

Stanley Tucci isn’t just Emily Blunt’s frequent costar—he’s her brother-in-law. The connection started at the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada, where Tucci met Blunt’s older sister Felicity.

Nothing happened immediately, but several years later they reconnected at Emily’s wedding to John Krasinski. Tucci and Felicity started dating and married in 2012, making Tucci officially part of the Blunt family.

Now family gatherings presumably involve discussions of both acting techniques and whose turn it is to do the dishes, which must make for interesting dinner conversation.

Cameron Diaz and Snoop Dogg

Long before either was famous, Cameron Diaz and Snoop Dogg attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School together in California. Snoop was a year older and, according to Diaz, very tall and skinny with lots of ponytails.

She’s admitted on talk shows that she’s pretty sure she bought substances from him at least once, though she can’t remember for certain. Snoop, for his part, recalls Diaz being friendly with his cheerleader friends and describes her as having been quite popular.

It’s a reminder that everyone has a past, even if that past involves completely different career trajectories.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg

This unlikely duo first met on The Martha Stewart Show in 2008, but their friendship really took off after reconnecting at Justin Bieber’s 2015 roast, where their chemistry was immediately obvious. The domestic goddess and the rap legend have since developed a genuine friendship, co-hosting cooking shows and regularly professing mutual admiration.

Stewart appreciates Snoop’s business savvy and cultural influence, while Snoop respects Stewart’s empire-building skills and willingness to embrace unconventional partnerships. Their 2016 show Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party let them showcase this odd-couple dynamic, proving that friendship doesn’t require similar backgrounds—just mutual respect and a sense of humor.

Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini

The creator of logic-driven detective Sherlock Holmes and the world’s most famous escape artist formed an unlikely friendship in 1919 over their shared interest in spiritualism. The twist? Their beliefs were completely opposite.

Doyle desperately wanted to believe in communication with the dead, especially after losing his son in World War I. Houdini, grieving his mother’s death, wanted to believe too but remained skeptical of every medium he encountered.

They were essentially Mulder and Scully, with Doyle insisting spirits were real while Houdini debunked spiritualist frauds. Their friendship became strained when Doyle refused to accept that the tricks he witnessed were just illusions, and eventually they grew apart over their fundamental disagreement about the supernatural.

Tom Hanks and Abraham Lincoln

Tom Hanks is Abraham Lincoln’s third cousin, four times removed. The connection runs through Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, making them distant relatives through a family line that stretches back centuries.

Hanks has acknowledged the relationship and even hosted a documentary about Lincoln’s assassination. The genealogical connection is verified and documented, proving that one of America’s most beloved actors shares DNA with one of America’s most revered presidents.

It’s the kind of ancestry that makes family reunions either incredibly interesting or unbearably pretentious, depending on who’s telling the stories.

George Clooney and Abraham Lincoln

Apparently Lincoln has relatives everywhere in Hollywood. George Clooney is related to the 16th president as well, though the connection is even more distant than Hanks.

Genealogists at Ancestry.com confirmed Clooney’s distant relation to Lincoln in 2012 through Lincoln’s mother’s lineage. Clooney is the half-first cousin five times removed, with Lincoln’s mother being the half-sister of Clooney’s fourth great-grandmother.

It’s the kind of family tree connection that requires a flowchart and possibly a genealogy degree to fully understand. Clooney has joked about the relationship, and while it’s incredibly distant, it’s been verified by professional genealogists.

Justin Bieber and Ryan Gosling

These two Canadian heartthrobs are actually related through an old family connection. Genealogists found they’re 11th cousins once removed through a shared ancestor from 1600s Quebec.

Neither grew up knowing about the relationship, and they discovered it only after both became famous and genealogy enthusiasts started digging into celebrity family trees. The connection is distant enough that they’re not invited to each other’s family gatherings, but close enough that some ancestral Canadian farmer probably never imagined his descendants would include both a teen pop sensation and an Oscar-nominated actor.

Blake Lively and Florence Welch

The Gossip Girl star and the Florence and the Machine frontwoman might seem like they exist in completely different celebrity spheres, but they’re genuine close friends. Their friendship is strong enough that Welch performed live at Lively’s wedding to Ryan Reynolds, which is about as meaningful a wedding gift as you can give.

The two have celebrated holidays together and regularly post about their friendship on social media. It’s a reminder that friendship can cross genre boundaries, and that actors and musicians can bond over things that have nothing to do with their respective industries.

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart

The physical comedy potential of The Rock and Kevin Hart’s friendship started when they met in 2014 while promoting Central Intelligence. Filmmakers wanted to exploit the visual gag of their height difference, and Johnson specifically requested Hart despite never having worked with him before.

What nobody expected was that the two would develop a genuine bromance featuring elaborate pranks and constant roasting. Their friendship has carried through the Central Intelligence release in 2016 and multiple Jumanji films, and their social media interactions suggest they genuinely enjoy annoying each other.

Sometimes the best friendships are built on mutual mockery and the willingness to look ridiculous together.

Barack Obama and Richard Branson

In February 2017, just weeks after leaving the White House, Barack Obama was photographed hanging out with Virgin founder Richard Branson at Branson’s private island in the British Virgin Islands. The two competed in water sports, with Obama showing off his newfound kitesurfing skills and winning their friendly competition.

Branson documented the visit in a blog post, describing their adventures with the enthusiasm of someone who just became friends with a former world leader. The images of Obama looking genuinely relaxed and enjoying himself sparked both delight and envy from people who wished they could spend their post-job vacation kitesurfing with billionaires on private islands.

These relationships demonstrate how success generates its own social network, bringing together the most unlikely individuals. The right school, the right neighborhood, or the right time all contributed to the formation of some of these relationships.

Others emerged as a result of the fact that celebrity allows individuals to enter social circles they would not otherwise be able to, enabling a president to take a vacation with a business magnate or a domestic goddess to become friends with a rapper. It’s evident that the typical guidelines for who you can befriend vanish entirely once you achieve a particular degree of success.

The end effect is an intriguing network of connections that transcends all genres, generations, and expectations, serving as a reminder that people will always find something in common, even in the most unlikely places.
