Cruise ships have grown so much over the years that some of them now rival small cities in size. These floating giants offer everything from water parks to ice skating rinks, and they can carry thousands of passengers at once.
What started as simple ocean liners has turned into a race to build bigger, better, and more impressive ships that push the limits of what’s possible on water. Let’s take a look at some of these incredible vessels that have earned their place as the biggest cruise ships ever built.
Icon of the Seas
Royal Caribbean launched this ship in January 2024, and it immediately became the largest cruise ship in the world. The Icon of the Seas measures 1,198 feet long and weighs about 250,800 gross tons.
It can hold up to 7,600 passengers when fully booked, plus around 2,350 crew members to keep everything running smoothly. The ship has 20 decks packed with attractions, including the largest water park at sea and seven different pool areas.
Wonder of the Seas
Before Icon took the crown, Wonder of the Seas held the title of world’s largest cruise ship. This Royal Caribbean vessel debuted in 2022 and spans 1,188 feet in length with a gross tonnage of 236,857.
The ship carries up to 6,988 passengers and features eight distinct neighborhoods, each with its own theme and activities. Passengers can enjoy a zip line that stretches nine decks high, multiple restaurants, and even a full-size basketball court.
Symphony of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas held the record from 2018 until Wonder arrived. At 1,188 feet long and 228,081 gross tons, it’s nearly identical in size to its sister ship Wonder.
The vessel accommodates 6,680 passengers and includes two rock climbing walls, a surf simulator, and an ice skating rink. Symphony also features a Central Park area with over 20,000 real plants and trees, bringing a touch of nature to the middle of the ocean.
Harmony of the Seas
This ship joined the Royal Caribbean fleet in 2016 and was the largest cruise ship at that time. Harmony of the Seas measures 1,188 feet long and weighs 226,963 gross tons.
It can carry 6,687 passengers and offers similar attractions to its sister ships, including the Ultimate Abyss, which is the tallest slide at sea at 10 stories high. The ship also has a Bionic Bar where robot bartenders mix and serve drinks to guests.
Allure of the Seas
Royal Caribbean launched Allure in 2010, and it shared the record for world’s largest ship with its twin, Oasis of the Seas. The ship is 1,187 feet long with a gross tonnage of 225,282 and carries 6,780 passengers.

Oasis of the Seas

Norwegian Epic

It holds 5,183 passengers and introduced the concept of studio cabins designed specifically for solo travelers. The ship has two bowling lanes, three waterslides, and restaurants from celebrity chefs. Norwegian Epic primarily operates in the Mediterranean during summer and the Caribbean in winter.
MSC Grandiosa
MSC Cruises launched this ship in 2019 as part of their expansion into larger vessels. MSC Grandiosa measures 1,093 feet long and weighs 181,541 gross tons.
The ship accommodates 6,334 passengers and features a Mediterranean-style promenade with shops and cafes. It includes Cirque du Soleil shows designed exclusively for MSC, along with a huge water park and Formula 1 simulators. The vessel serves primarily European markets and offers cruises in the Mediterranean year-round.
These Giants Keep Growing
