14 Things People Used to Fear That Are Now Considered Normal
Earlier generations would look at new things suspiciously. Your grandmother would have told you how people lost their minds over things that we don’t even think twice about nowadays. It’s funny how something can transition from being nasty to being utterly normal within a generation or two.
I will illustrate 14 things that formerly used to cause individuals to stay awake at nighttime but nobody bothers with anymore.
Electricity in Homes
Back when they first started wiring houses for electricity, people were absolutely terrified. Local newspapers printed horror stories about folks getting zapped or houses burning down.
Some old-timers thought electricity would leak out of wall sockets like some kind of invisible gas. These days? We just hit the switch without a second thought.
Women Wearing Pants
Crazy but true – cops actually arrested women for wearing pants in the early twentieth century. Some fancy restaurants wouldn’t even let women through the door if they showed up in trousers instead of dresses.
This nonsense lasted till the sixties in some places. Now nobody would bat an eye at pants on anybody.
Television
TV used to be public enemy according to plenty of worried parents. They swore it would wreck your eyesight, destroy family time, and basically turn kids’ brains to mush.
Remember your mom yelling “don’t sit so close!” like the screen was radioactive? Now we’ve got screens everywhere – even stuck to our walls like paintings.
Credit Cards
When credit cards first showed up, plenty of folks thought they were straight-up evil. Financial advisors gave dire warnings about plastic money ruining America’s economy.
Many considered them morally wrong – like some slippery slope to financial doom. Fast forward to now – we tap phones against little terminals to buy coffee without thinking twice.
Cell Phones
The first people walking around with mobile phones looked ridiculous to everyone else. They were big, chunky things that screamed, “Look how important I am!”
Health experts worried about brain cancer from radiation, and everyone thought only workaholics or show-offs would need a portable phone. Try leaving home without your smartphone today—it feels like forgetting pants.
Online Shopping
Typing your credit card info into a website? Absolute madness according to most people when online shopping first appeared.
Buying clothes without trying them on or groceries without squeezing the produce first seemed completely backwards. The whole concept felt sketchy – like handing cash to some random stranger.
Now Amazon delivers something to most neighborhoods daily.
Microwaves
When microwave ovens first appeared in kitchens, they were viewed with great mistrust. People honestly thought they might cause cancer or contaminate food with radiation.
The more insane conspiracy theorists even believed they were government spying devices. These days, they are just another dull gadget that sits next to your coffee maker and gathers fingerprints.
Computerized Banking
ATMs and online banking scared the daylights out of many customers used to paper passbooks and friendly tellers. Trusting a machine with your money seemed insane – sorta like throwing cash to the wind and hoping for the best.
Nowadays, most young adults have never even been inside a physical bank branch.
Rock Music
Parents and preachers once thought rock music would destroy civilization. Albums were publicly burned, concerts were shut down, and warnings about moral decay filled Sunday sermons.
Elvis swinging his hips on TV caused genuine panic. Modern parents might roll their eyes at today’s music, but few think it’ll cause society to collapse.
Flying in Airplanes
Early airline passenger flights frightened the ordinary individual. Passengers would literally leave written wills prior to boarding.
Any discussion about a crash spread like wildfire, validating everyone’s belief that humanity was not created to shoot across clouds inside metal tubes. People now gripe about legroom and lost connectivity at cruising altitude.
Automation
When machines began to displace human labor in factories and offices, folks freaked out about widespread unemployment. Labor unions cried apocalypse as automated systems replaced phone operations, factory lines, and bank operations.
Although some jobs have certainly vanished, we’ve managed to integrate self-checkout lanes and internet booking systems without society collapsing.
GPS Navigation
Many people were initially concerned about car navigation systems. According to experts, they would either ruin our natural sense of direction or cause drivers to recklessly follow the wrong directions, putting them in danger.
There are urban tales that GPS may steer cars down cliffs or into lakes. For trips outside of their area, the majority of drivers now refuse to leave the driveway without computerized help.
Video Games
When video games first appeared, they faced crazy opposition. Parents, teachers, and psychologists claimed they’d create a generation of violent, brain-dead zombies with no social skills.
Gaming was blamed for everything from poor grades to aggressive behavior. Today, the gaming industry makes more money than Hollywood, and even grandparents play mobile games while waiting at the doctor’s office.
Social Media
Experts warned when social media platforms initially came out that they would ruin genuine human connections and expose everyone to stalkers and creeps. A lot of people wrote these networks off as fleeting young fads.
Rather, everyone now maintains profiles on several sites, including your great-aunt, corporations, and politicians.
Not So Scary After All
People adjust to new situations really rapidly. Anything that seems strange and terrifying now is unlikely to cause a stir tomorrow.
Every generation sees the same pattern: the same anxieties that were initially sparked by electricity and television are now evoked by artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and virtual reality. Perhaps we should keep this in mind the next time something new happens and everyone starts to panic.
