15 Times Soldiers Were Used as Test Subjects
Throughout American military history, thousands of servicemen became unwitting guinea pigs in government experiments. Chemical weapons, mind control drugs, radioactive materials – these tests often violated basic human rights while leaving lasting scars on the men who’d served their country. Many programs remained classified for decades, with veterans only discovering the truth years later when documents were finally declassified.
The scope was staggering. Everything from radioactive materials to hallucinogenic drugs was tested on unsuspecting soldiers. Here is a list of 15 times soldiers were used as test subjects in some of the most disturbing military experiments in American history.
Mustard Gas Experiments in Panama

During World War II, the U.S. Army conducted mustard gas experiments on American soldiers in Panama – testing how chemical weapons would perform in tropical climates. Around 1,200 recruits were ordered to strip to the waist and enter wooden chambers where they’d be doused with the chemical agent.
The men began screaming and writhing in pain as mustard gas burned through their skin. Some pounded on locked doors, begging to be released.
Race-Based Chemical Weapons Testing

The military specifically targeted minority soldiers for chemical weapons experiments during WWII, using them to test whether different races had varying resistance to mustard gas. African-American, Japanese-American, and Puerto Rican troops were deliberately selected as test subjects – while white soldiers served as the control group.
Scientists believed racial differences might make certain groups more suitable for frontline chemical warfare exposure.

Edgewood Arsenal LSD Experiments

From the 1950s to 1970s, over 7,000 military personnel were secretly dosed with LSD and other psychoactive drugs at Maryland’s Edgewood Arsenal. Soldiers thought they were testing equipment or participating in routine medical exams – never knowing they were being given mind-altering substances.
Many subjects were placed in padded cells and observed as they experienced terrifying hallucinations. Psychological breakdowns followed.
Atomic Veterans Radiation Exposure

Between 1946 and 1962, approximately 400,000 servicemen participated in atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, either as witnesses or cleanup crews. These ‘atomic veterans’ were positioned dangerously close to nuclear detonations – then ordered to march through radioactive fallout zones shortly after explosions.
Many developed cancers and other radiation-related illnesses decades later, yet they were sworn to secrecy under threat of treason charges.
Project SHAD Chemical Warfare Tests

The U.S. Army sprayed Navy ships with biological and chemical warfare agents from 1963 to 1974 as part of Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense. Thousands of sailors aboard these vessels were exposed to nerve gases like VX and Sarin – plus toxic chemicals and biological agents without their knowledge.
The personnel received no protective equipment. They weren’t informed they were part of an experiment.

Operation Teapot Nuclear Testing

During the 1955 Operation Teapot nuclear tests in Nevada, soldiers were positioned in trenches just miles from ground zero. After the bombs detonated, they were ordered to advance through the radioactive blast zone – simulating battlefield conditions.
The military wanted to study how troops would perform in nuclear warfare scenarios, though it meant treating the men like expendable test subjects.
BZ Hallucinogen Experiments

The Army tested a powerful hallucinogenic chemical called BZ on soldiers at Edgewood Arsenal. This caused subjects to lose touch with reality for days.
One soldier reported seeing the room change shape – blood coming out of walls, people turning into skeletons before his eyes. The drug was designed to incapacitate enemy forces, yet soldiers served as unwitting test subjects to determine its effects.
Plutonium Injection Studies

Manhattan Project scientists injected plutonium into accident victims and hospital patients – studying how quickly the human body eliminated radioactive materials. While these weren’t active military personnel, the research directly supported nuclear weapons development.
It established protocols later used on soldiers. The subjects had no idea they were being used in atomic weapons research.

Desert Rock Nuclear Exercises

During the 1950s, thousands of soldiers participated in Desert Rock exercises where they witnessed nuclear weapons tests at close range. Troops were positioned in trenches and foxes just 2,500 yards from ground zero – then ordered to advance toward the blast site immediately after detonation.
The exercises were designed to condition soldiers for nuclear battlefield operations, though at tremendous personal cost.
MKUltra Military Recruitment

The CIA’s MKUltra program specifically recruited military personnel for mind control experiments involving LSD, hypnosis, and psychological torture. Soldiers were often told they were participating in legitimate medical research – or equipment testing.
Some subjects received daily doses of hallucinogens for months while researchers studied long-term psychological effects.
Sarin Nerve Agent Testing

Military volunteers at Edgewood Arsenal were exposed to deadly Sarin nerve gas to test protective equipment and antidotes. Soldiers were placed in gas chambers and exposed to concentrations that could cause death within minutes.
Many subjects suffered lasting neurological damage and respiratory problems from these experiments, though the military continued testing for years.

Biological Warfare Agent Exposure

The military conducted secret biological warfare tests by releasing bacterial agents in populated areas and on military bases. Soldiers stationed at these locations unknowingly breathed in experimental biological weapons designed to cause illness or death.
The tests were conducted to study how biological agents would spread in real-world conditions, using servicemen as unwitting test subjects.
Sleep Deprivation and Stress Testing

Military researchers subjected soldiers to extreme sleep deprivation, sensory isolation, and psychological stress to study their breaking points. These experiments were designed to develop interrogation techniques and understand how much abuse the human mind could endure.
Subjects were often kept awake for days while undergoing various forms of psychological torture, though many suffered permanent mental health consequences.
Truth Serum Experiments

Soldiers were given experimental ‘truth serums’ including sodium pentothal and other drugs designed to make subjects reveal classified information. The tests were conducted to develop interrogation tools for enemy prisoners, yet used American servicemen as test subjects.
Many soldiers experienced severe psychological trauma from these drug-induced interrogations that lasted well beyond the experiments themselves.

Electromagnetic Radiation Studies

Military personnel were exposed to high levels of electromagnetic radiation to study its effects on human health and performance. These experiments were connected to research into non-lethal weapons and radar technology.
Soldiers often developed unexplained illnesses years later that may have been connected to their radiation exposure, though proving causation remained difficult due to classified records.
When Secrets Finally Surface

The full scope of these experiments only became public through congressional investigations in the 1970s and Freedom of Information Act requests that continued for decades. Many veterans spent years suffering from mysterious illnesses, unable to get proper medical care because they couldn’t tell doctors about their secret exposures.
Today, some atomic veterans and chemical test subjects receive limited compensation, yet thousands of others remain unrecognized victims of their own government’s unethical research programs.
