16 Creepy Things Found in Old Tombs
Tombs were meant to be peaceful resting places, but archaeology has revealed some truly unsettling discoveries buried beneath the earth. From ancient Egypt to medieval Europe, these burial sites have yielded artifacts and remains that would make even the bravest explorer think twice about venturing underground.
The dark chambers of the past hold secrets that challenge our understanding of ancient cultures and their beliefs about death. Here is a list of 16 creepy things found in old tombs that continue to haunt archaeologists and fascinate the public.
Screaming Mummies

The most spine-chilling discovery has to be the so-called ‘screaming mummies’ found in Egyptian tombs. These preserved bodies were discovered with their mouths frozen wide open, as if they died in terrible agony.
A mummy known as Man “E” was unwrapped in 1886 by the head of the Egyptian Antiquities Service, Gaston Maspero. Man E was found inside a plain coffin wrapped in sheepskin.
Maspero was shocked to find the mummy’s hands and feet bound. The facial expression suggests the person may have been buried alive or poisoned, making this one of archaeology’s most disturbing finds.
Vampire Burial Graves

Poland has revealed some truly eerie burial practices designed to keep the dead from rising again. Between the 1600s and 1700s in Poland, some people were buried with sickles over their necks or rocks wedged under their chins.
These precautions were taken to prevent the dead from rising again as vampires who, locals believed, would return to suck the blood of friends and family. These ‘vampire burials’ show just how seriously our ancestors took supernatural threats.
The sickles were positioned to decapitate anyone trying to sit up from their eternal rest.

Bog Bodies with Preserved Faces

European peat bogs have preserved human bodies so well that they look almost alive after thousands of years. Bog bodies are cadavers that have been preserved in the peat bogs of Europe.
They are noteworthy because of how well the peat preserves the body. Many of the bog bodies discovered still look quite lifelike as the unique conditions of the peat bogs help preserve their skin, hair, and internal organs.
The most unsettling part is how their facial expressions remain intact, creating an unnerving connection across millennia.
Shackled Mass Graves

Athens revealed one of the most disturbing mass burial sites ever discovered. In 2016, at least 80 shackled skeletons were discovered in Palaio Faliro, a suburb of Athens, Greece.
The skeletons are a disturbing sight. Their hands are shackled, and many lie with open mouths as if they were screaming when they died.
These young men appear to have been executed together, possibly followers of a failed political coup. The iron shackles still binding their wrists tell a story of their final, terrifying moments.
Aztec Skull Towers

Mexico City’s ancient Aztec capital has yielded some of the most macabre architectural features ever found. Since the Aztec practice of human sacrifice is well-known, it is not surprising that multiple human skulls have been discovered in Aztec temples.
An enormous tzompantli, or skull rack, stood outside the Templo Mayor in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The skulls were not merely decoration but were meant to be spiritual symbols.
In 2015, archaeologists discovered two towers flanking the skull wall. These towers contained hundreds of human skulls, creating a terrifying display meant to intimidate enemies and honor the gods.

Babies Wearing Skull Helmets

Ecuador provided one of archaeology’s most bizarre and unsettling discoveries. Perhaps one of archeology’s most chilling discoveries came from Salango, Ecuador, where researchers were excavating burial mounds dating to around 100 BCE and associated with the Guangala culture.
Archeologists were surprised to unearth the remains of babies wearing the skulls of other children. Nobody knows why infants were buried with these macabre head coverings, but they likely served as protection for the vulnerable souls in the afterlife.
Ancient Murder Victim

Spain’s mountains hold evidence of humanity’s oldest known murder case. In 1987, researchers in the Atapuerca mountains in Spain discovered a cave housing the skeletal remains of at least 28 people.
The bones were dated around 430,000 B.C., and after a years-long effort, the researchers discovered that one of the deceased had been murdered. They painstakingly pieced the skull back together and found two head wounds.
The victim had been repeatedly struck with a blunt object, making this a 430,000-year-old cold case that was finally solved.
Mummified Single Organ

France revealed one of medicine’s strangest preservation mysteries. For a long time, it was a total mystery why Arnegunde’s body had decomposed while her lung became mummified.
In April 2016, though, researchers reported at a conference in Germany that they’d figured it out. Arnegunde’s lung showed chemical traces of plant compounds, as well as high levels of copper.
The queen’s body had completely decayed except for one perfectly preserved lung, creating an anatomical puzzle that took scientists decades to solve.

Decapitated Gladiators

York, England, uncovered a grisly reminder of Roman entertainment practices. A set of skeletons discovered in York, England, belonged to tall men who died before the age of 45.
What makes them gruesome is that all of them had also lost their heads. Their heads were buried with them, sometimes on their chests, and sometimes between their legs or feet.
These were likely gladiators who met violent ends in the arena, then received unconventional burials that reflected their brutal profession.
Tomb of Sunken Skulls

Sweden produced one of archaeology’s most mysterious and disturbing finds. In 2009, archaeologists were excavating the bottom of a prehistoric dry lake bed in Motala, Sweden, when they stumbled upon the foundations of a mysterious stone structure … sealed at the bottom of an ancient friggin’ lake.
Inside this underwater tomb, they discovered skulls placed inside other skulls like nested dolls, along with stakes driven through bodies that had been set on fire before burial.
Chemical Warfare Victims

Syria revealed evidence of ancient military horrors. In 2009, during an excavation of the ancient Roman city of Dura-Europos in modern day Syria, archaeologists found evidence of one of the oldest instances of chemical warfare.
The victims were found in tunnels beneath the city, where they had been overcome by poisonous gases during a siege. Their positions suggested they died trying to escape the deadly fumes.

Witch Prison Artifacts

Scotland’s dark history of witch trials left behind chilling evidence. Sometimes an archaeology discovery doesn’t need to involve bones to be disturbing.
A 15th-century church in Aberdeen, Scotland, contains an artifact like that. The chapel contained a stone pillar set with an iron ring, which may have been used to restrain accused witches in 1597.
The iron ring embedded in the church wall was used to chain up accused witches during the Great Scottish Witch Hunt, when hundreds faced execution.
Cannibalized Neanderthal Remains

Belgium revealed disturbing evidence about our ancient relatives. Researchers discovered Neanderthal bones that showed clear signs of cannibalism, with cut marks indicating the flesh had been systematically removed.
Experts continue to question what caused some Neanderthal groups to turn to cannibalism. Malnutrition could have been the cause, but there is no proof at the Goyet site that this was the case.
It has also been theorized that this practice may have had a religious aspect. The bones tell a story of desperate times or ritual practices that we may never fully understand.
Sacrificial Burial Pits

China’s ancient sites have revealed massive human sacrifice operations. Shimao, a site along the Great Wall of China, is a large, fortified Bronze Age settlement covered with a stepped pyramid.
Under the pyramid, archaeologists discovered at least six pits that were filled with numerous human skulls. The skulls belonged to 80 young girls, and are widely believed to have been the result of human sacrifices.
These young victims were buried beneath monuments to power, their lives offered to gods or rulers we can only imagine.

Ancient Torture Evidence

Kenya produced evidence of prehistoric violence that shocked researchers. About 10,000 years ago, something horrible happened in what is now Kenya.
Twenty-seven people — men, women and children — died of trauma. Their bones, discovered in 2012 in the sediments of Lake Turkana, show the marks of blunt weapons like clubs and sharp projectiles like arrows.
One woman was found with broken knees and hands positioned as if she had been bound, suggesting systematic torture before death.
Mysterious Burial Masks

Egypt continues to yield strange funeral practices that defy explanation. Recent discoveries have included burial masks that don’t match typical Egyptian styles, painted with unknown pigments and featuring faces that seem to scream or show extreme emotion.
These masks were found on bodies that had been mummified using unusual techniques, suggesting either foreign influence or secret burial cults operating within ancient Egyptian society.
Echoes from the Underground

These disturbing discoveries remind us that death has always been humanity’s greatest mystery and greatest fear. From ancient sacrificial practices to medieval superstitions about the undead, our ancestors developed elaborate rituals to deal with mortality that often seem alien to modern sensibilities.
The artifacts and remains found in these tombs don’t just tell us about ancient burial practices—they reveal the universal human struggle to understand what lies beyond life. Each unsettling discovery connects us to people who faced the same existential questions we grapple with today, though their answers often took much darker forms than we might expect.
