Appalachian State upends Michigan

College football had never seen anything like it before. Appalachian State won the game 34–32 and blocked a field goal in the final seconds to secure the win, which was the first time a ranked FBS team lost to an FCS opponent.
Michigan was supposed to be one of the best teams in college football that year. Appalachian State played in a much smaller division and wasn’t expected to keep the game close. The crowd in Michigan couldn’t believe what they were watching.

Rulon Gardner defeats Alexander Karelin

Wrestling fans witnessed a true David and Goliath story at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 when Rulon Gardner faced Alexander Karelin, who had not lost a single match in 15 years or given up a single point for the last 10 years. Karelin was known as the Russian Bear and was thought to be the greatest wrestler who ever lived.

The 1969 New York Mets, known as the “Miracle Mets,” went from having losing records to becoming World Series champions by defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in five games. The Mets had been one of the worst teams in baseball for years.
Their fans were used to losing and didn’t expect much from another season. The Orioles were loaded with talent and looked like sure winners. But the Mets started playing like a completely different team.
Their pitching got better every game. Their hitting came through when it mattered most. By the end of October, they were champions of the world.

Brazil loses to Germany 7-1

The 2014 World Cup was being played in Brazil, and the home team was expected to win it all. Brazil had some of the best players in the world and millions of fans cheering them on.
Germany was good, but nobody saw what was coming in that semifinal match. In just 18 minutes, Germany scored five goals and the game was basically over. Brazilian fans sat in stunned silence as their team fell apart.

USA beats England in 1950 World Cup

Going into the 1950 football World Cup, the United States were 500/1 underdogs to win the tournament, but they managed to beat England in what remains one of the most extraordinary upsets in the competition’s history. England had some of the best professional players in the world at that time.
The American team was made up of part-time players who had other jobs during the week. The game was played in Brazil, and most people thought England would win easily. When the final whistle blew and America had won 1-0, newspapers around the world couldn’t believe the result.

New York Giants beat New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42

The New England Patriots were trying to complete a perfect season with no losses. The Giants got the football back down 14-10 with 2:39 left on the clock and went on a drive that included one of the most memorable plays in NFL history when Eli Manning escaped three Patriots players before launching a 32-yard pass to David Tyree.
Tom Brady and the Patriots offense looked unstoppable all season long. The Giants had barely made it to the playoffs and weren’t given much of a chance. That final drive became legendary for all the right reasons.
Manning somehow got away from players who should have tackled him. The catch that Tyree made while holding the football against his helmet is still talked about today.

Greece wins Euro 2004

Portugal was hosting the European Championship and had some fantastic players on their team. Greece had never won a major tournament and wasn’t expected to get past the first round.
Their style of play wasn’t pretty to watch, but they knew how to defend and score when they got the chance. Game after game, they found ways to win. They beat the hosts Portugal in the opening game and then beat them again in the final.
When the tournament ended, a country that most people couldn’t find on a map had won the biggest prize in European football.
Iceland reaches Euro 2016 quarterfinals

Iceland has fewer people than most big cities, but their national team made it all the way to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016. They beat England along the way, knocking out a team that had players worth millions of dollars.
Most of the Icelandic players had regular jobs and played football on the side. Their fans became famous for their loud chanting and unwavering support. The whole country seemed to be behind the team.
When they finally lost to France, they had already achieved more than anyone thought possible.
Denmark wins Euro 1992

Denmark wasn’t even supposed to be at the 1992 European Championship. They only got invited because Yugoslavia was banned from the tournament due to political problems.
The Danish players were called back from their summer vacations and told they were going to play in the biggest tournament in Europe. Nobody expected them to do well since they had barely any time to prepare.
But they kept winning games and getting stronger as the tournament went on. By the time the final was over, they had beaten Germany to become champions of Europe.

Saudi Arabia beats Argentina in 2022 World Cup

Lionel Messi’s quest to finally win the World Cup was the topic of conversation leading up to this Group C opening, and a victory over Saudi Arabia was presumptively expected, but the underdogs competed admirably. Argentina was ranked as one of the top three teams in the world.

Japan beats South Africa in 2015 Rugby World Cup

South Africa was one of the favorites to win the 2015 Rugby World Cup. They had bigger, stronger players and much more experience in big tournaments.
Japan was ranked near the bottom of all the teams and had never beaten a major rugby nation in World Cup play. The game was played in England, and most fans expected South Africa to win by 30 or 40 points. Japan played with more heart and energy than anyone had seen from them before.
With seconds left on the clock, they chose to go for the winning try instead of kicking for a tie. When they scored, rugby fans around the world couldn’t believe what they had just witnessed.
George Mason reaches Final Four in 2006

George Mason Patriots, a No. 11 seed, defeated Michigan State and defending national champs North Carolina, before beating No. 1 seed UConn to make the Final Four. March Madness is famous for upsets, but nobody saw this one coming.
George Mason was a small school that most college basketball fans had never heard of before the tournament started. They had to win six games in a row against much better teams to make it to the Final Four.
