Giant Creatures Once Documented
People have always been drawn to stories of giants. Not just big animals—but enormous ones that seemed to step straight out of myths and old drawings.
Some of them really did exist. Others may have misunderstood sightings or legends that grew over time.
Either way, they left behind stories, bones, and plenty of curiosity. Some were found deep in forests.
Others ruled the oceans or skies. Here’s a look back at some of the biggest creatures ever mentioned in history.
The Mapinguari of the Amazon

Deep in the Amazon, stories tell of a tall, hairy creature with backward-facing feet and a loud, awful cry. Locals said it stood on two legs and gave off a terrible smell.
It was feared, not just for its size, but for its voice that echoed through the jungle. Some believe it may have been based on an extinct ground sloth.
Either way, stories of it still pop up now and then.
The Giant Moa of New Zealand

Before people arrived in New Zealand, giant birds called moa roamed freely. The tallest ones stood over 12 feet high.
They couldn’t fly, but they were fast on the ground. These birds were hunted to extinction within a few hundred years. Their bones still turn up in caves and on farms.

The Kraken of Nordic seas

Old sailors told tales of a sea beast so big it could wrap around ships and drag them under. Known as the Kraken, it had arms that reached like tentacles from the deep.
Today, many think they were seeing giant squids, which can grow over 40 feet long. But at the time, it was a creature to be feared and respected.
The Elephant birds of Madagascar

Madagascar was once home to a bird heavier than an ostrich and almost as tall as a giraffe. Elephant birds couldn’t fly, but their legs were strong and fast.
They laid eggs bigger than a human head. These birds disappeared around 1,000 years ago, likely due to hunting and habitat loss.
The Giant of Castelnau

In 1890, a professor in France found a thigh bone unlike any other. If it belonged to a person, that person would’ve stood over 11 feet tall.
The find sparked talk of ancient giants. Some think the bone was misidentified.
Others still wonder if a giant once walked through southern France.

The Titanoboa of ancient Colombia

After the dinosaurs, one snake ruled the land—Titanoboa. It stretched over 40 feet long and weighed more than a ton.
It lived in hot, swampy areas and hunted large prey, including crocodiles. Fossils of this snake were found in a coal mine in Colombia.
It’s still the largest snake ever discovered.
The J’ba Fofi of Central Africa

Some say giant spiders live in the jungles of Congo. Called the J’ba Fofi, these spiders are said to be as big as puppies and spin webs across forest paths.
Reports from the early 1900s described large webs and strange sightings. Nothing has been proven, but the stories haven’t gone away.
The Giant beavers of North America

Long ago, beavers roamed parts of North America that were twice the size of today’s kind. They grew up to 8 feet long and weighed over 200 pounds.
These beavers didn’t build dams but likely lived near water, just like their smaller relatives. Fossils have been found in lakes and riverbeds.

The Megalania of Australia

Megalania was a giant meat-eating lizard that once lived in Australia. It could grow as long as a small bus and weigh over half a ton.
Aboriginal legends mention huge reptiles that match its shape. Some believe it survived longer than the fossil record suggests.
The Giant sea scorpions

Before dinosaurs, the oceans were full of strange creatures—some as long as a car. Giant sea scorpions, or eurypterids, had sharp claws and thick armor.
They ruled shallow waters and left behind fossil tracks in ancient seabeds. Their size was unmatched by anything else in their group.
The Kap Dwa legend

A tall tale from the 1600s talks about a two-headed giant captured in South America. Said to be 12 feet tall, the body was later brought to Europe.
It ended up in sideshows and odd museums. Some claim the mummy still exists today.
Most likely, it was a mix of costume work and old stories.

The Megatherium of South America

Imagine a sloth the size of a pickup truck. That was Megatherium.
It stood on two legs and used massive claws to grab tree branches. It was slow but strong and had no natural enemies—until humans arrived.
Fossils are still found in Argentina and other nearby countries.
The Bunyip of Australian rivers

The Bunyip comes from Aboriginal stories and was said to live in rivers and swamps. People described it with different features—sometimes like a dog, sometimes more like a seal with claws.
Settlers later reported hearing strange sounds at night. The truth behind the story is still unknown.
The Giant penguins of New Zealand

Long before today’s small tuxedo birds, there were penguins that stood as tall as a person. These giants swam in the cold waters off New Zealand and ate fish just like modern penguins.
Their fossils show strong bones and wide flippers. Eventually, they were replaced by smaller species.

The Yeren of China

In the mountains of central China, stories tell of a big, hairy figure called the Yeren. It walks on two legs, is covered in reddish hair, and avoids people.
Some say it’s China’s version of Bigfoot. Expeditions have searched the forests but never found clear proof.
The Arctotherium bear

This Ice Age bear was one of the biggest meat-eaters to ever walk on land. When it stood on its back legs, it could reach over 11 feet.
It lived in South America and likely had few predators. Fossil finds show huge skulls and strong jaws, perfect for hunting or scavenging.
The Giant camels of Syria

Buried in Syria’s desert, bones were found from camels that stood over twice the height of today’s kind. These animals likely lived alongside early humans.
They were strong enough to handle the tough desert life. Their discovery in the early 2000s surprised even the experts.

The Nandi bear of East Africa

For over a century, people in Kenya have reported a creature they call the Nandi bear. Described as thick-bodied with strong limbs and a fierce face, it was feared by many.
Some believe it was a type of large hyena or an undiscovered species. Nothing has been found to prove it ever lived, but reports haven’t stopped.
From footprints to fossils, the giants still echo

Whether they came from real bones or old tales, these creatures left their mark. Some were proven by science.
Others live only in memory and local stories. But they all show something about the people who told them—how they saw the world, what they feared, and what amazed them.
Even now, the idea of giant beasts sparks curiosity. And maybe that’s why these stories never really go away.
